Chevy Cobalt vs EVO X? Really?

Hoping this isn't a repost, if so feel free to slap me with both the n00b and search sticks.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/13/i...balt-ss-turbo/

Since the Autoblog Proving Grounds is still under construction (in my mind), we can't tell you what it's like to drive the Cobalt SS Turbo at 11/10ths. Fortunately, the latest issue of Car and Driver includes a massive comparison test called the Lightning Lap in which 22 cars ranging in price from the $22,995 Cobalt SS to the $282,306 Ferrari 430 Scuderia are raced around Virginia International Raceway. The list of cars slower than the Cobalt SS around VIR tells the whole story:

* Mitsubishi Lancer EVO MR
* Lexus IS-F
* Audi S5
* Honda S2000 CR
* Dodge Challenger SRT-8
* Lotus Elise SC
* Subaru Impreza WRX STI
* Dodge Caliber SRT-4
* Volkswagen R32
* Honda Civic Mugen Si

IIRC in the car and driver article the Evo is slightly faster than the SS, but it was really close.

impressive numbers for a fwd car for sure

The Cobalt SS is an amazingly fast car for the price but I would imagine that it would take a very good driver to hustle it around the track as fast as an Evo X.

I think a lot of it will be related to the track as well. Each car has strengths and weaknesses...

chevy def improved...but with a FWD car, you can get pretty limited pretty fast-where as the Evo can handle a little bigger # at the wheels and still retain some DD and trackability....but def a contender in the FWD class fo sho!

Stock EVO X is horrible at a high speed course like Virginia Speedway. WAY UNDERPOWERED and AWD doesn't really help.

I was really surprised by how well Corvette Z51 did, it was only 2 seconds slower than the GTR.

In the C&D test at VIR, the Cobalt beat the MR around the track. In another test, I think Motortrend, the MR edged out the Cobalt by a couple hundredths at Laguna Seca.

Stock for stock, the Cobalt is essentially equal to the MR around a road course. Who leaves an Evo stock though? The Evo has much greater potential.

My nissan was 250whp FWD; putting down power was an issue

The Cobalt is the king of FWD cars right now though. It'll be interesting to see how the new Focus RS does in Europe, rumored to have 300hp with the 2.5L, 5-cylinder turbo from Volvo.

Ford claims they have some patent coming for a new hub design or something that completely eliminated torque steer, so you do not have to limit power in 1st and 2nd. It may end up being pretty sweet

Back on topic though, my gf got a cobalt as a loaner, and the dash is made of what appears to be the same plastic that out bumpers are made of, but unpainted. I normally don't give a **** about stuff like that, but it is really bad... is the SS's dash the same?
