I can't believe they are looking for $17K for that. There is a fair bit of damage all over the car.

yea, the underside is torn up, that would cost a boat load to fix and would probably never drive right

They would need some good connections that give them discounted parts and serious discounted labor costs. For a normal person to try and fix those repairs, I would think they need at least 10-12k for all that body work, parts, labor etc and it probably still wouldn't run like it did before. After big accidents like this, mosts cars never will. Thats what I think.

I don't think that would work. I'm pretty sure the person who owned this X before the accident had full coverage insurance on it and after the accident the insurance company estimated the cost of repairs and realized it would cost way too much to fix, thats why instead they justed filed it as a total loss. And if one insurance company says its a total loss, I'm pretty sure they all will because they all use the same standards and basic estimates when appraising a wrecked vehicle. Again my .02 cents though.

I know, tell me about it. You can pay 8k more and buy a used X. I would pay maybe up to 8k for it and work on it as a side project as well.

Ouch... most likely crashed on a racetrack. That thing is totalled. You'd have to be a moron to buy that car; there's no replacement part for a damaged frame...
