How do i tell if its JDM
ONLY the AUSDM model has the headlight washer .. and because of that the license plate cannot be side mounted like the JDM .. and it blocks up about 10% of the ducts to the IC ..
It is also the pig of the series at 1650kg (3630lbs for you imperial guys) paper ..

but I guess different strokes for different folks.
I think the blockage is closer to 5%, given the small size of the center holes. Not a big deal to me. I can either change to a better intercooler from say AMS, or remove the plate on track days.
I hate the asymmetrical side mounting, & I don't undertstand why Mitsubishi can't design the bumper for a good center mount plate (like what Audi does so well).

The effects is not only limited to the intercooler ..
Audi is not designed to be a track car like the evo .. the concepts are totally different ..
280ps (276bhp) initially
300ps (296bhp) on the facelifted version, from Oct 2008.
No hardware changes, most likely the boost is from the ECU updates, and the actual gain would be very minimal for the peak figure. It is more of a '280ps limit' thing which they are no longer following after the facelift (since other Japanese car companies have been ignoring it for awhile now)

That said, I love audis. Can't wait to see the new RS4 - the new S4 is pretty sweet and the RS4 should be even better.
Basically, we need the center "bumper" area due to the need to mount the crush bumper.
But wouldn't it be more effective if Mitsu made the intercooler longer & lower so the whole fin area of the intercooler is exposed ? It it a space or design issue?
Afterall, the holes are quite small to be as effective as a fully exposed area.
As stated, for track days, I will remove the plate, which make either mounting on the side or center irrelevant when it comes to performance.
Of course, for road driving, a center mount plate will lose a bit of hp, but it doesn't really matter as we are not racing on public roads. Some may even argue that side mount plate will affect the aerodynamic imbalance.
At the end of the day, its a matter of preference. If given a choice, I wouldn't even put a plate in fount of my car.
