Operating SSS Evo X without FAST key

I remember seeing a few threads about this previously, but I don't recall any definitive answers. I also ran a few searches to no avail.

I want to throw a standard, "chip-less" key into my wetsuit pocket to get into and start the car with when I go surfing. I figure I'll go have a spare key made up. I had no problem doing this with my previous car, but is this even possible with the FAST key? I'm pretty sure you can't start the car with a normal key, unless it is the standard key plugged upside down into the fob, right? If this is the case, then it looks like I'm SOL.

Any other surfers out there who have a solution for this (aside from putting the key in a bag on the beach)?

You have to put the key into the back of your fast-key system and then insert it into the keyhole.

you still need the remote, so you gotta find somewhere to stash that.

why not take the key out of the fob
hide the fob in the car
and lock the car from the outside with the key from the fob.

idunno if it will work im just guessing.

I was under the impression that the car won't lock if the fob is inside the car, even if the key is separated from the fob. I'll have to experiment with that tomorrow, because that would be the easiest solution.

Does our "normal" key have a chip in it or anything or is it ok if it gets wet? I mean I already put my fob through the washing machine and it came out alright, but I'm trying to avoid any similar incidents in the future.

the chip is in the fob, the metal key is just a key, no chip or anything

Once you are at the beach, take the key out of the FOB, then wrap the FOB in something that won't allow water into it. Not sure what that would be, like a good plastic bag or something. Honestly, I really don't see any other way that would work. As long as you think you wouldn't bust the bag/casing while surfing, or if it would suck to have it on you while surfing.

Dunno if this will be to big or bulky, but you could try these.

You don't need the fob at all. You can take the key completely out of the fob and unlock/start the car, this is for a what if the fob battery is dead, you can still get into the car and start it with the metal key. So not sure but I think the metal key is just a metal key nothing speacial, but I don't know for sure.

You actually can't start the car at all without the FOB. I once thought that when I left my car at a parking garage and left the attendants only the metal key. They had to put my car in neutral and roll it over to the side. Dumbly, I believed the dealership when they told me it was a valet key so you didn't have to give them the expensive part. Idiots. Yes, the metal key is for starting the car after the battery has run out in the FOB, but you need to plug the backside of the metal key into the area where it came out of the casing, then turn it. Otherwise, your car says "Unable to Locate Key" or something like that.

can't u just put the key in the trunk and lock the doors? Then when u need the key push the button on the trunk and it will pop open to get ur key (will not let u in the car doors with key in the trunk). This works on my MR, not sure if canadian cars are dif.

^ Hm, that might be a good idea. I doubt anyone would ever press the trunk button, so that would be a great place to keep the keys. I'll try that out and see how it works.

As weird as this sounds...get one of those bags weed dealers use that are double sealed and small (but thick) and put the key in that. The ones that are silver on one side and clear on the other.

Hey macpsu, just out of curiosity...how do you get your surfboard to the beach? racks? or front seat? or something else?

I haven't used the Evo to transport the boards yet, I've been waiting for a good solution for the FAST key situation. I also haven't been able to justify spending all the money on a rack system. When all is said and done, it will cost around $500 for the Yakima system w/ surf and snowboard attachments. I would rather buy go-fast parts or get a tune for that money . I'll probably buy a Yakima hard rack sooner or later though.

On my old car, I used a soft rack because I didn't care about the paint, but I'm definitely not doing that with the Evo. I need to figure something out soon so I can stop bumming rides to the beach.
