HID Question / problem / bad luck ???

Ok so this is the second time i have been expierencing this problem... i had an HID kit on my mustang that had this problem and now my evo X Fog light Hid kit... The mustang HID KIT was a top brand and the evo fog HIDS are a generic brand i guess....

Here is the problem.. when i turn on the lights only one light comes on... i have to turn off and back on for both to turn on... this always happens when the car is first started.. ( when the lights are turned on for the first time) after that i can turn off and on all i want and both will always come on.... Seems to always be the same side as well.. in the evo and the mustang... i have no idea why this is happening and i wonder if anyone else has this problem with aftermarket hids???? never have this problem with OEM hids.... is this common??? any fixes???? does it have something to do with relays??? cable leangths/??

No such thing as a "top brand" HID kit. They are "all" (mostly) Chinese made junk. Unless you use D2S bulbs from Philips, Osram (Sylvania) or GE the bulbs are crap. The ballast are also cheaply made. What you get is always a "crap shoot" Sometimes you may be lucky and get all their best pieces. Most of the time at least 1 item should be a reject. Could be any of those problems you listed. The wiring to the ballasts should be at least 16 awg size. Pos and neg. You should use 2 relays the current surge is like 60 amps each ballast for a few milliseconds. This is hard on the relay contacts.

I say the Ballast didn't get enough juice from the initial turn on. Mine does that too on the H-7 kit that I had.

So wait, I'm curious. Do you guys think the problem could be cheap/bad wiring from the power source to the ballasts? Or from the ballasts to the bulb?

I have a kit that I installed in my old truck, and while it's only about a month old, I haven't had any problems with them at all. The wiring that came with it was a 100% replacement of any wiring used for the lighting, except to connect back to the oem connection for the switched on/off. If the power source for the HIDs cannot support the initial power draw when the ballasts ignite the bulb, that can cause the ignition to fail. How are they connected to the battery?

Are they slim ballasts vs regular size ones??? How old are they?

I have HID's in my fogs for my X-Runner and it happens if I leave my lights on and start the truck up only one will fire. It's due to not enough power getting to the ballast. As some1 said, use a relay kit or if you want to make the wires a little larger that will work too. The relay is your best bet though.

has anyone actually done the relay??? any DIY??? i mean its not the worst thing and i will probably end up living with it unless there is a DIY post somewhere along... it just looks CHEAP when your driiving your evo and one fog is out and you dont even realize it.... SUCKS im already in the habit of turning them on twice and looking at the rear bumpers of cars to see if they are both on...

haha, Im always looking at other peoples bumpers to make sure both of mine are on as well. I thought I was the only one with this problem. Can anyone that doesn't have this problem post a link or something to the HID fog light kits they purchased. I forgot where I got mine but they're 5000K and I think they're too blue and would like to match them to the SSS HID headlights so I was thinking about 4300k or lower. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Its not like 1 brand of kit is better than the other. If they are Asian made kits (Ballast and Bulb) it is a "crap shoot". Some units will have a problem others will not.

These kit makers let their customers do the quality control and deal with the bad components, either getting them replaced or living with the problem or buying from another one of these brands next time. All of the Chinese ballasts and bulbs (95% of the kit market) are made by just a few manufactureres (3 or 4) with 100's of brands (labeling) of the same products.

Its pretty much all the same stuff.

If you want quality and low cost buy used OEM ballasts and bulbs off ebay or from your local body shop or junk yard. Trust me you will be way ahead of the "KITS" this way. Performance, reliability, life etc., its the ONLY way to go.

most of the time, its "install" related. Check your grounding points and check your wiring. Make sure you use the relays that come with the kit (if it came with some). My bet is on your grounding point(s). The fact that its happened to two of your cars with different types of kits leads me to think its your install.
