So here's the deal as of now. The seller wants to complete the transaction via eBay so it'll be covered for up to $50,000. I'll have to send the money first via bank to bank through Paypal. Then the car will be shipped to nearby dealer. I get 5 days to look it over and such. If I find it not acceptable, I can ship it back w/ no cost.

This seems like a safe way to complete a transaction, but what do you guys think I should do or not do?

You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

-DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.
-NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
-FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
-CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
-NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
-AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

From craigslist.

Dont take it to a mechanic unless you absolutley can't do anything car wise. All they do is look for leaking fluids, check the brakes andtires and then look at the most obvious BS. Its the biggest waste ever. I did it when i was in high school. I thought they were going to fully check it out. They did what i mentioned. Stuff anyone can do at home in 10 mins.

see how much you have to work harder for a new one... w/ better interest %, it may be worth it. I was dealing a used X too, after math, I went w/ the new one.

So it's not safe? I had a suspicion when he wouldn't take a pic. of the VIN. He just sent me a CarFax report, not a link, but an offline web document that says that his Evo's in VA and another report of some sort (I just clicked it and showed a blank page with other info). The other report had an Evo with a different VIN and registered in FL.

Well, thanks guys for helping me avoid a scum bag and wasting all my savings.

^ yeah very skectchy.

Basic rules for buying a car.

1) never give any money until you see it, touch it, drive it.
2) when you do see, touch, and drive if you like it, give money and take car on the spot.
3) drive and enjoy.

Hey, yeah I am in the same boat as this guy, wanting to buy my second evo. I am in Iraq right now and I've been dreaming and looking for Evo 9 Mr 's since I got here. I almost bought an SE for 15500, and it turned out being a scam. Anyway, can someone explain to me exactley what to do when buying from a private seller? Like as far as bill of sales, title transfers, that kind of stuff? Or if you got one for sale I have the dough! I'll be back Nov 3 of this year. Thanks guys

I would never buy anything above $1000 online. Heck, I just laugh at people trying to scam my stuff for sale online (craigslist) like laptops and such....

Beware, this is exactly how scammers conduct their deals. They claim they will go through ebay and you get several days to review the car. BS! Unless the car is actually listed on ebay, and you actually win the auction, you have no buyer protection from ebay. Just stop dealing with that guy because it is 110% a scam.
