Evo X for Dirt and Road

Want the car for everyday driving, periodic tearing up windy roads in California and to rip up dirt roads in mountains and to jump if I get the chance

1st choice is evo touring
pros:
-Best for looks
-SST trans
-No wing
-BBS wheels are nice and lighter than the GSR
-Better brakes
-lower rpms on hwy

cons:
-SST trans (I understand the fog lights can be removed to increase ventalation for transmission cooler) Also if I want to drift the GSR with clutch would be easier I believe. Also how well does this trans hold up with hard driving on pavement and dirt. What about catching air in desert off jumps

2nd choice is GSR
pros:
-Bullet proof trans
-price

cons:
-rear spoiler
-high rpms on hwy
-heavier wheels. BBS on MR is better

Future mods would be: Works Suspension (I live near them), Lower car a bit for looks. Will effect the offroad though. I like the looks lowered. Air filter, Works ECO tune for better gas mileage, Light forged wheels like Volk. Maybe an exhaust. Nothing real fancy. I favor gas mileage for longer rides and lower operating costs.

Give me some ideas mainly on SST vs 5 speed for my use. Will SST hold up. Will the removal of fog lights help in cooling SST. Also any opinions on Ralliart too. But from what I have seen and from calls I have made, EVO is the way to go.

Thanks

You want to rip up dirt roads and jump the car? lol

Why do you list the wheels as a criteria, if you plan on upgrading them anyways?

I think the MR would hold up fine for your plans. It comes down to your preference of clutch or no clutch. You won't overheat the tranny on the street, only hear about that on the track.

Please don't jump your $35,000 evo on some dirt road after you buy one.

I disagree. I say jump it if you have the money. Make sure you record.

I want to have fun with the car. I like the Touring MR best. Looks best. The SST trans would be nice from what I hear. I just want to make sure it holds up. The 5 speed sounds like a bit noisy on hwy. I like shifting on turns but this SST sounds like what the heck just drive.

I drove a Ralliart with SST and and a GSR. Both were nice. No power for quick turns. Turns out the salesman did not know the ASC needed to be turned off. I thought "wow a heck of a turbo lag". The cars would just coast around turns with me flooring the gas. Next time on test drive everything off.

My main purpose is to drive from San Francisco to Mendocino on 1. From Bodega Bay to Mendocino on 1 is 88 miles of twisty turns on the coast. A favorite stomping ground for me on cars and bikes. Also tons of quiet twisty roads from coast to 101.

The dirt is roads in the Mendocino Forest. Tons of logging roads. Same with Sierras. However Sierras have way more rocks. The deserts in So. Cal are fun too. That is where there are cool jumps. Mainly low humps in road for small jumps. I had built a SCORE 5-1600 Baja Bug in 1980 to race. That really caught air. The EVO is for low jumps. Mainly high speed short hops. Not beaters. However I have seen some You Tube videos of Subaru's catching big air. I don't have the money for this.

Love to pass cars and drive hard. This car is for FUN!!! Mainly for all the fun roads in Northern CA. No track. I just love the open road.

So I wanted to make sure the SST trans will hold up. However the 5 speed may be more fun. But the car will be a daily driver. So SST again.

I say go for the GSR.

I really can't justify driving a "sports car" with an automatic tranny no matter how quickly it shifts gears. The 5-speed is perfectly fine for daily driving IMHO.

Wish I had the money to toss around my 35k evo over dirt jumps lol. I would love to make it a rally car with an anti-lag system and the whole nine yards

i would rethink the dirt gravel jump in short the rally idea this is a reasons why:
if you wanna jump , with the full weight car, and no cage, street or track coilovers... im not even going to the stock one, its simply a bad idea.

The coilovers you need for jump starts around $8K.

for Rally X the best you can get , with no or little jumps is the AMREngeneering. Check them out they make a fenomenal suspension. 8 way adjustable etc , with a very very friendly price. Also you can stiff them up and lower the car down for track use. Basically is almost unlimited the possibilities with them. They are awesome for DD too. Since you can have from a very soft to a very stiff set up

http://www.amrengineering.com/proddetail.html?veid=36

About dirt road make sure you have enough , under body protection , like tank guard , Diff guard etc. also you cant do it on street tires, gravel tires i recommend with 16 inch wheels, if you dont want to change the rear brake set up.
About brakes: The front you need anyway for dirt, AMS makes a cheap and good gravel kit.
ANd this is just for a start to go gravel - dirt.

then also i would get a 5MT over the SST. Its too much money if you will have problem with the SST.

Thats all now.

Rob,

Thanks. That was what I was looking for.

I have done even more searches on dirt for evo and sti. Sounds like STI is better suited stock. However EVO is the winner between the two from reading.

I can run dirt roads and that is about it. Gravel needs a lot of under body and fender protection.

The 5 spd sounds like the best bet. However the touring MR looks the best. The SST would be the best for Hwy driving too. However I'm told that the 5 spd 2010 has more insulation than the 2009 and is quieter on freeway.

Also the SST is expensive to repair. The 5 speed much more friendly.

I'm back and forth on the two. I dislike the wing in back. I can remove and put on a nice styling wing and plug the holes. The touring looks sorta stylish. I almost got a 335i. However the car is perfect for driving but no fun. The 2008 M3 6MT I got to drive for an hour and fell in love. I don't have the money for one or the maintenance funds needed. I use to have a 1999 Z3 chipped with Bilsteins. The Z3 was perfect for me. A real sports car. Passed cars on turns and tight roads with ease. Passed almost as well as my BMW K1200S. I sold because of economy. Bummer. Would buy again but it was a bit small for a 6'4" guy.

In a way the EVO is perfect car except looks and lack of room for skis and bikes inside. It is tight, small, quick. The M3 with V8 is big and heavy. Not as good a car for tight windy roads. The EVO will eat them up. Also maintenance is less.

Have thought of the Ralliart for storage of a bike or skis. But EVO rules it sounds like. I haven't tried the WRX or STI. Both would be nice for everyday. But I really want a car to rip the roads. One that makes me want to have fun like in my old Z3. I tried the Z4. It is like a 335i. I tried a 135i. Ok. The EVO and Ralliart are tight. I love the tight turning with steering wheel. The SST on Ralliart was ok. The 5 speed you can pop clutch and feel shifts better.

I'm thinking.

About jumping. I love to jump cars. I have launched jeeps, trucks and baja bugs. Total gas. I never really thought of rallying. But saw the Subaru's flying in some You Tube Video's and was hooked. When I was into offroad racing it was like a drug. I was broke. Spent tons of money. Drove like a maniac (still do, thank god). I see that the EVO stock is mostly a great fun road car. The STI might be a good road and a good offroad car stock. I need to test drive one.
