The list of problems with the X
Hey everyone...
My IX has been sold today and as much as it makes me sad, it's time to move on to the X. I've wished it for a while and finally the time has come.
Anyways, I've been reading the X forums a lot for a while now and I'm trying to compile a list of things to do as soon as I get the car to avoid any problems from the start.
So far I have:
Urgent problems that I wish to address right away:
- Fuel Pump Relay (Replacement part #8627A011)
- Airbag Sensor
- Fuel Line
- Transmission differential pins upgrade (Shep/Buschur)
Potential future problems:
- clutch (and with it the master cylinder when switching to a stiffer aftermarket clutch)
- clutch master cylinder upgrade (offered by SSP for now)
- seat fabric coming off
I'd like you to remind me of any stuff that I might have forgotten and for the future I will update the list so anyone getting into the X can find all the parts in one place. Also if you would be so kind to tell me the part #'s / solutions to the problems I have already listed (eg. fuel pump relay part # and so on).
Thanks everyone!

I was mainly aiming at stuff that needs fixing right away ... And possibly would like if people posted a way of solving the problem too (example: get another fuel pump relay part # xxxxxx at mitsubishiparts.net, swap out the padals for the ones u can buy from ralliart - just guessing at xxxx) and some prices to go with that would rock too...
Are you buying a 2010? Good chance the fuel relay is changed, though I'm not certain.
The fuel relay replacement is: #8627A011
The airbag sensor is most likely already done on the 2010s.
The differential pins can be fixed via ShepTransmission/Buschur. Don't know if anyone else offers them.
Plastic gas pedal snapping has happened to like... 2 people. I wouldn't worry about it, but I'm sure someone has a fix.
Stock clutch isn't a problem anymore than it is for any other car that's going to be modded.
Plastic clutch cylinder is same deal; if you need to replace it, though, SSP offers one: http://www.sspperformance.com/
Material coming off... well, yeah. No "fix" per say. Duct tape? Take it back to dealer, or buy an MR and get leather
. Personally, if/when mine starts to come off, I'm going to do a leather conversion/Ralliart Leather, heh.
Notchy transmission can be "helped" by changing to AMSOIL; I did, and it's fine when warmed up.

Half of the listed items have TSBs that are free fixes. Diff pins, weak clutch, and the need for a master cylinder (after buying an aftermarket clutch with a stiff pressure plate) won't be needed by many people...just don't launch the car and problem solved.
You'll have to pardon me if I don't get too worked up over $35. lol.

There is a lot of people with USDM cars that are exported elsewhere (more than 50% of the Evo X's in my country are US imports as the price difference of buying a brand new X from the dealer and buying an X from the US when the car was released was approx 18.000$ cheaper from the US)

Most of those bugs are from 08's which was a first model year of a 100% new car and mostly minor annoyances. I would hope the 8's and 9's were reliable as Mitsubishi had 20 years into the 4G63 and quite a few years into the chassis as well. People that buy 2010's shouldn't have to worry about most of the little bugs. X is a great car and an improvement on the 8's and 9's in almost every way.
Like I said, an aftermarket clutch with a strong pressure plate. That isn't something that someone with a brand new X needs to run out and immediately fix, which is the premise of this thread. If you're installing an aftermarket clutch then you should think about it.
I'm installing an ACT HD on tuesday. I may very well break a master cylinder...I don't know. It was my choice to install a stiffer clutch.
I replaced my fuel return line since I installed an adjustable FPR with -6an lines. If I hadn't the part was $20 according to some threads. The airbag sensor problem is only an issue if you live in an area that salts the roads. That doesn't apply to everyone.
It sounds like you made a conscious choice to buy a X without a warranty. Just like I decided to mod mine and lose most of the warranty.
