There is a better reason as to why the car runs so rich.. its called government standards. They regulate how much HP a car can make based on its displacement. They state that a 2.0 motor can only make so much power, so Mitsubishi had to lower the hp to that mark. The easiest way to do that was to add fuel.

When i first got my X and its rich 9.5 afr.... I gained 12 hp and 22 tq just buy cutting 10% fuel out at WoT. I'm not a mechanic so I didn't really understand how you gain power by using less fuel at first. Now I understand more how the AFR's work.

I love the backyard mechanics who know how to "tune" a factory car.

There are people who's DAY JOBS are to CALIBRATE the factory ECU. They don't have to answer to Joe Idiot the customer, they have to answer to many documented standards, and the powertrain engineers specifications, all while meeting NVH and emissions standards.

Hang out at your local dyno tuner's shop when customer cars come in, and you'll understand why Mitsu has no patience.

Most of these kids/young adults can't drive, let alone modify/tune their cars.

Warranty is for a STOCK CAR, not modified.

1. Notchy/grinding during shifting (even after break-in)
2. Running rich (bad for engine)
3. rattling noises from the shifter housing
4. Center Differential pins breaking (isn't this a safety issue for people who ACTUALLY use the settings and rely on the differential for example driving in icy conditions?)
5. clutches going bad / short life span

1. Never had that problem as I don't shift to fast which is why the problem happens.
2. Yes it does run rich will kills mileage, but it's a way for Mitsu to try to cover themselves
3. Can't say i've heard any rattling noises from there.
4. Heard a lot about the pins... I drive my car pretty easy the majority of the time so if mine breaks, hopefully it's when i'm no longer the owner.
5. Got 10.5k on my clutch and it's fine, if you drive like a ******** all the time, or just don't know how to drive a 5 speed AWD car (which many who claim they can really can't) in general you will have this problem.

i don't think some of you are understanding the op's comments.. for those of you that don't think mitsu could/would approve a shop to tune cars and still warranty their work, watch top gear the fq series evos are all making more power then stock WAY more power and they are still warrantied, keep in mind the warranty isn't as long as it would be on a standard evo but still, it has a warranty. Mitsubishi is, in my opinion one of the sorriest japanese car makers out there imo as far as it comes to reliability.. next time you go out for a ride count the montero's you see blowing out blue smoke, check out how many galants you will see with sh@#ty paint jobs on them, and then think to yourself, for the same money, toyota , nissan, and honda don't seem to have any of these systemic problems almost always associated with mitsu. Yes they make a really good chasis and awd system but their cars as a whole don't stand up to the expectations you would have when buying a 35-40k dollar car.. after owning one myself i can tell you that if it wasn't for the fact that the evo is more aftermarket "friendly" i don't see why someone wouldn't just go out and buy a 335i and turn up the boost. i'm 80% sure it would last alot longer...

You do realize you asked and answered your own question by mentioning the aftermarket support for the Evo, right?

There is no aftermarket for the x35 cars, except for some stupidly expensive **** that no one buys since they're all *******s who hate themselves.

The consumer in me would love to head down to Mitsu headquarters with you, pitchfork in hand. But the business side of me has to level and understand that Mitsubishi is in the business of making money, and they're barely doing that.

You can bet your bottom dollar if I was sitting in the throne at Mitsu HQ, I'd be denying warranties left and right. Don't get me wrong - if I had a stock as rocks car that needed a warranty claim, I'd fight it to the death. But if I knowingly broke something, or modded a part that caused a failure, I'd expect what was coming to me.

Problem nowadays, customer never tell the true story when something goes wrong.
This is why Mitsubishi will void warranty even if that part or that is good quality or the tuner is a professional. ( unless they work hand to hand like BR did with the BR350 or in UK with FQ series )

I will void a warranty when a customer swap PCM/ECM or open himself an Verado engine underwarranty. I don't care if he used to work on V8 inboard or whatsoever.
Why to that point, simply because nowadays customer will do whatever they can to cheat and use the warranty as a last resort.

Electronics items come with seals that if broken void warranty. I don't see people complaining about this because it makes sense. Yet people expect warranty on $30K machinery when they have tampered with programming and replaced factory parts with aftermarket parts. Honestly how many threads have we already seen of people blowing an engine due to poor tuning and removed all the aftermarket parts to try and scam warranty? Lots and that's why manufacturers are so **** now and I can't really blame them. Why should Mitsubishi spend $$$ fixing failures that wouldn't have happened if the car was stock.
