Bought an 08 GSR, have some questions....
I recently bought an 08 GSR that was a recent trade in at a dealership. The car is immaculate inside and out with only 12k miles. It has Aero, SSS, and is Phantom Black. It's beautiful! Anyways, the guy who traded it in is not interested in letting me contact him to ask questions about the car, and the dealership knew nothing about it (they did tell me he was 38 years old so that is a good sign). While the car was on the lift I was able to identify a couple of mods. It definitely has a Perrin downpipe with a HFC and a Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust. It also has a Blitz intake filter (filter box removed). I was unable to find anything else engine wise. My main question here is how do I tell if it's been tuned? If it has, is there any way to put it back to the stock tune if I need to take it in for service (without them noticing obviously)? I talked to my local dealer service manager and he said exhausts are no problem and warranty won't be voided, but tunes are frowned upon. The stock air box is also with the car so I plan on putting that back on too if need be. Thanks and it feels good to be back!
For tune/ROM saving, so you can go back to "stock", you need a device, Evoscan GPS or Laptop + Evoscan + Tactrix cabling, or Cobb AP; and of course the ROM.
The dealer is likely to reset your ROM without even checking. The 2008 had a TSB out for Re-ROMing the ECU because of a high end intermittent miss. That happened to me last fall. Joy o joy, because thankfully I haven't tuned my own 08 GSR. So before I tune, I need to stash a few additional bucks so that I can buy something for this type of need.
OBTW, you have a good service guy. TB parts, DP and CC, were told by a now-closed dealer's service mgr that they'd void warranty. Manual says CBE only. Intake can throw codes.
If it were me, I'd drive it like I was crazy, see if you can get any SES lights under WOT and extreme driving. I know that untuned, it's not that hard to get a MAF overboost code thrown, downshift from 60mph to 4th gear, driving like you stole it. Throws it 4 times out of 5 for me.

Thanks for the quick reply. So would it be a good idea to take it to the dealer with the airbox on, have them flash it, and then go from there? I'd feel more comfortable if my local dealer looked at the car and gave it a clean bill of health so that if I do have major trouble in the future, they'll at least have record of checking out the car. And come to think about it, I don't know if I specified to the dealer cat back or turbo back. I just said "exhaust".
During the test drive I drove it for a good 15 minutes and then finally got on it pretty good. Did low rpm spools in every gear and then rowed through all 4 pretty hard a few times. No codes. It was about 35°F that day. I pick the car up Saturday so I can do more then.

I would not go to a stock tune with those mods on there. A high flow cat and down pipe are going to give a stock tune fits. Contact Clipse3GT, he is in the Cleveland area. He can answer your questions/concerns. Probably worth a drive to him to look at your tune also. The dealer is not going to be able to tell you anything about a clean bill of health. If it runs without codes, has fresh oil, that is as good as their opinion is worth. YEP, runs good, thanks for the $80 bucks.

By the way, if you have a high flow cat and down pipe, they know something is up for sure.

Stock airbox comes with the car. Thanks though.
dboz: thanks for the contact info.
I'm looking forward to getting this thing home! Quite a departure from my previous evo.

About a year ago, I did the same thing you are doing now. I found an evo x with a cat back and intake (phantom black too). The car was at a dodge dealer so I had them take it to the local mitsu dealer for a check over. Right off the bat, they said no warranty coverage due the exhaust and intake. So be careful there. I got the car anyway of course. Then later, I came to find out that the transmission, transfer case, and rear dif have all been replaced. The original ower of my car was a younger guy that apparently couldn't drive and had no cares about the car lasting. But I look at it like I have new parts in my car now. I suspect he also had a cobb ap installed at one time too, but I haven't anyone check that for me.
With all that said, the car has been great for me. No problems at all. I'm not sure how long the clutch will last me, but I'll cross that bridge later.
Enjoy the car. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

Good to hear you enjoy it! That is my plan. My last evo was a money pit that I was constantly working on. I don't want that again. Yeah there is some risk involved with buying a used one for sure. I was underneath the car for about 15 minutes with flash light checking everything out. It's super clean and all looks to be original. It runs and drives great, has every dealer service record, etc. The only thing that bugs me is not being able to talk to the previous owner to ask a very very simple quick questions. Oh well.
I've still got my stock air box, stock BOV, and TONS of noise. I do have the K&N, but the noise picked up, BOV noise, initially with the TBE flowing. Putting on the CBD carbon fiber hood now has this thing sounding like a track star who also happens to have asthma. Not bad asthma, just NOISY. Whoosh, poof, whoosh, poof. Music baby!
If you bought it from the dealer that way and are worried about the warrenty then tell them your not going to buy it until they put it back to stock. You def dont want a stock tune with aftermarket parts.
Just custom tune mod it and be happy :-)

No dealer is going to put an evo "back to stock" for you. There is enough demand for them that they sell "as-is" waranty or not. If the car sat in the lot for a year, they still wouldn't do it. They may drop the price after some time, but never add new parts to an old car.
