Want help/suggestions about horrible gas mileage
Hello everyone
I've searched a lot about the fuel economy for our cars and all that. But I wanted to get suggestions/help about my situation. So when I first got the car I would drive it hard and didn't really pay attention to gas and filling up. But since gas has been going way up for premium, I've been paying attention to gas mileage, and how often I fill up. I use the odometer to see how many miles I get to low fuel warning, and I've been getting 170 MAX. One time my refuel warning came on, and only drove only 5-8 miles and the yellow screen of death flashed on. I was shocked it'd be that quick. First low fuel is like 2 gallons left, and when I refilled after the yellow screen of death, I filled up to 14 gallons. I couldn't believed I burned that much gas so quickly. I don't drive as hard as I use to but doesn't explained this crappy of gas mileage. I'm starting to rethink my purchase, maybe not a good idea. Money is tight with me now, job is giving me less hours. Been looking for a new job for higher pay.
Could it be a certain issue I'm having with the car or is it just the car and rising gas prices? My friend in his sti gets over 200 and drives hard.
One great idea i would have, but probably hard to do, is get a second car as a dd, good fuel economy one.
One last resort I might have to do is sell the car, even tho I've only had for 3 months?
Any suggestions/help would be great. Just wanted to vent to fellow evo guys to see about any help.
Thanks
Kevin

insurance cost me an extra $300/yr and the dd gets 35mpg so the savings in gas cover the insurance, tags, and put a couple hundred extra in my pocket every year (negligible w/ the depreciation on the DD, although its about bottomed out) by using it to commute vs the evo as well as saves wear and tear on the more valuable car...not to mention the DD is way cheaper to maintain so theres some savings as well.
I had already owned my current DD for 8 years when i bought the evo so it was paid off and not worth much anymore anyway which is why i kept it but if you could find a cheap car on craigslist or something it might be worth it.
... now for all the comments about buying an evo for the gas mileage...
i looked at your sig and you have the accessport tuned map. Did you start getting worse mileage after that?
It could always be worse, back when gas was $4.87 for premium, i was DD'ing an FD rx7 getting about 10 miles to the gallon :P

i get a range of 200 to 230 miles on a tank of premium. some is highway but thats when i gun it. I also have a tb exhaust and ams intake. but i was still getting around the same when it was still completely stock.
Not only do our cars have horrible fuel economy out the box once you start tuning, it gets worst and to boot we have the smallest tank in the world. I'm sure your friends STI has a larger tank.
I had an VIII prior to the X and I hate the fact they put a MPG function on the dash. It literally makes me ill.
With that said, I love my EVO's and higher operating cost is just the compromise you have to live with. Fuel, tires, brake pads, transmission oil changes, etc...But the acceleration and handling makes it worth it.
I feel for your financial situation. If a second car is out of the picture then if you can make do without the acceleration an 06 and older mini or any S2000 are great handling/fun cars with excellent fuel mileage.
Even a focus ZX3 is a fun drive. You should test one out.

probably should have traded your ralliart in for a gts, considering you dont have a set in stone work schedule.
i get about 360 miles on a tank with mixed city.hwy driving and just over 400 with all hwy driving.
this is one of the reasons why i opted to get a 2009 gts and buy my fiance a new car and buy a house instead of an evo.
sometimes its best to think about the greater picture then just instant gratification...
ill have my evo soon im only 24 so i have plenty of time.
if i were you i would just baby the evo dont push it and try to get the best gas mileage you can. Also try to look at your other expenses and cut them out.
for example do you have cable ? if so get rid of it, get an hdtv antenna and live with it. i just did this, i had cable for 3 years on my own paying 100+ a month....its been about 3 months since i got rid of it and its been no problem, i save about 90 a month.
also do u have a premium cell phone plan ? i know my 2 lines cost me about $180 a month, if i were tight on money i could instantly get those down to 100 a month but with less features.

I get about 250-280 when the light blinks. I too have an AP, and it's my only mod.
How fast do you drive? I found out 60-65mph gives me at least 20+ mpg...
I combine 40% city and 60% freeway.

I do 170 also. Although... I am not tuned and mostly sit in traffic. My average moving MPH this week was 14mph. Can't complain though... it's fun boosting here and there on a ****ty commute to and from work. Makes the day more enjoyable. I usually shift between 3200-4000rpm depending if I feel like making the greddy scream
I average about 20-21 a tank (mostly 80% highway driving). I usually fill up 10-15miles after the fuel reminder pops up..last time i actually ran out of gas because i had to much on my mind hahah..that was fun. I cruise at about 70mph, and try to stay out of boost, shifting at 3k and easy on the pedal majority of the time. Im not sure how accurate the gauge is but when i get on the highway, i usually reset the reader. I tend to see an average about 23-24 mpg on the highway @ 70ish. Im currently on bolt-ons and a tune.. main thing is stay out of boost, it kills your tank..

My light comes on after 130 miles of mostly city driving. Look into a leaner tune if you want better mileage. Are you filling up on 93? Try shifting before 3k

im bone stock and i get about 215-240 to a tank(when the gas light dings) usually anywhere from 11.5-12.2 gallons so i'm averaging 19-21mpg about 60%hwy, 40% city. went on a long trip the day after i bought the car and i only got 23mpg but that was cruising at like 75-80 in sub 30 degree weather, had i been doing 65-70 i probably would have gotten 26+
Also the aero of our cars is pretty terrible for mpg purposes, the front end is a big flat wall lol

I get about 20 MPG average, and I don't exactly stay out of boost. Seems like something might be up with your tune. I'm a stock 2010.
