Getting first Evo, need help!

Sorry about first post, but felt the Topic didnt belong in this section so just made a whole new thread.

So hey guys, im looking to purchase an Evo. I have been looking at the 2008 model because i heard that was the best year for the Evo X not sure if it is or isnt so bringing that question to the Evo community. Also im only 17, 18 tommorow and this is going to be my second car. I have a mazda 6 now and im looking to mod the Evo X later down the road and i heard that the MR Edition isnt the best to mod. That true or not? I like the paddle shifters and all in the MR edition but then again i want to mod it later down the road, since now i wont have money because ill be paying off the loan needed to get the car. So should i go with a GSR or MR edition? Any help on modding the car would also be helpful. Im not sure how to mod the car and what to do to increase the Horsepower and etc. So any help there would be helpful for me down the road. All tips are appreciated and thanks for the help guys.

Thanks,

Alex

Basically everything you asked is easily attainable at the press of a button.

Search is your friend, and everyone else is going to tell you the same thing. Maybe start by reading through some dyno threads to help look for engine mods, then the suspension threads, etc.

if i were you i would steer far far far away from an evo x at the age on 18. ins will be crazy expensive..since its a loan no bank would finance without full coverage, why not save money and wait for the next years evo put a nice down payment, and ins would probably be a lot more cheaper since U.S standard safety is changing it seems by the day...(pagani new car got denied)

sorry to jack the OP's thread but, im on the same boat as him.
well not really, i have been approved to get an 08 evo x PB. (trading my 06 ralliart) already with 18" sa-55m wheels, some minor mods and carbon fiber goodies. to be honest, i mean, if you can pay for it, then why not get it? right? i mean, its all up to you if you want it. ive been in this dilemma for almost a week now, ppl say get it/dont get it, and i know its a personal decision. to be honest its a steal of a deal for a 08 evo with only 6KMS on it. but anyway back to the OP, think about whats gonna happen down the road with your future. like for me, i think if i should really get it cuz its what i want, but do i really need it? u know.

I got my Evo X when I was 19, and had an 06 STI when I was 17. Its really not that big of a deal.

Although my parents trust me and I've been on their insurance now for 3 years, with no tickets. I also was driving 10 second cars in high school, but thats another story.

Seriously, if you get it, don't drive like an *******, I know it means nothing from someone on the internet...but do yourself a favor and don't, you'll regret it the minute you get a ticket or crash...Also, you can have fun without being an idiot

thats why, cause your on your parents, try to get insurance by yourself, but to the OP, that insuance will be high if your gonna be on your own policy, but good luck

Thats true, dependent on a few things. You can get a resonably priced insurance quote on your own with full coverage. I'd say expect to pay atleast 200 a month on your own, possibly more, depending on where you live, your driving record, etc.

this is what i meant, if your on your parents thats a different story, but going on your own is expensive.

my first car was a honda prelude all i had was liability and what i payed a month was as much as i pay the evo a month now just for insurance alone.

The SST was said to only withstand up to 400 hp. There are a few people on here that has surpassed that number.

The manual, I believe, can be pushed up to about 500 with just an upgraded clutch.

If you can afford it go for it, just make sure it's the smartest choice, VIII & IX are still great Evo's. Do your finances and be honest with yourself, also, think of maintenance cost, SST oil changes are not cheap, neither tires nor brakes, stuff like that...

^^^ This.

Many people buy things and don't think of maintenance and get in over their head. Let me go ahead and tell you, YOU WILL WANT TO BUY MODS. Brakes are expensive. Oil changes are expensive. Tires are expensive. Gas is expensive.

You have to change the oil every few months, and the tires will have to be replaced within the first year of ownership(probably). Gas will be around 200ish a month if you DD it. Tires are around 800-1000 installed. Oil changes with the right oil are going to be atleast 40 bucks, and thats if you do it yourself, my dealer charges about $100. Brakes are expensive too, and on an '08 the rotors might need to be replaced soon. Not to mention the 30k mile maintenance, which I would do right when I bought it just to make sure it was done right.

So I would take: car payment + insurance + around $300 + price for mods(no matter what you plans are you will find yourself buying some mods).

If that still sounds do-able than I say go for it. I got my VIII back when I was 19(in less than a year I had already put $10k in to it) and bought the X brand new when I was 20.

O yea, and I haven't ever heard of anyone saying the 08's were the best year of the X's.. ever. The best thing about the '08 is that it has an aluminum valve cover and the '10 and '11 have plastic valve covers. But besides that just about everything on them are the same besides little upgrades to the inside. I would say the '11 is the best year though because they finally got all the little issues resolved..

11 is the best year, imo the upgrade to the center console was the best thing they could do to help the interior (other then getting rid of the faux cf trim).

any 08s you find are probably either abused, modded or overpriced.

Ok thanks for all the reply's guys, but according to my mom. If i take out a loan, i then need to have the car put under my name in insurance. With all the taxes and registration and etc. in NJ, the evo i wanted would come out to $38,000. Which is alot of money for an 18 year old. So if i took out the loan the insurance is in my name under AAA in NJ and it comes out to $3500 a year for insurance instead of $1500 a month under my dads, but cant do that because i would have the loan. So im most likely going to have to wait to get this car. I will probably get the car in 2 years. Because with all that going to college its a ****ing lot of work for school and work lol. Also would need like a $20,000 loan which is like $500 or so month for 36 months and insurance comes out to be $300 or so a month. I would need like 3 jobs to afford this or work full time and like no college lol. Right now my main concern is college and then once i get a job just get the evo of my dreams. Unless i find a cheaper evo and a older one. Anyone know a good older year for the evo?
