Exclamation People with AMS intakes please PLEASE READ.

Hi everyone,

I bought the AMS ram intake black. It has an open air filter. I installed the intake and my idle became erratic. If i turn on the air conditioner my car will die. Its died twice in the past when the air gets turned on and my car is sitting.

So I took it off and put the stock air box on and my car runs normal again.

So heres my question:

If I get my car tuned will the erratic idle go away?

I paid a lot of money for this POS and I don't want it sitting in the house collecting dust.

Thanks for reading.

did you install the shield to block the air coming off the radiator fan? Also the AMS intake changes the size of the MAF and it is recommended that you have a tune for it.

If the AMS intake you have is the short ram, do you have the shield on? With the a/c on it blows into the intake. I believe with this intake you should get tuned right away. I dont think it uses the stock maf size like ETS does.

Edit: Yes, what Og_Neon said as well. Others will probably tell you the same thing.

Yeah, confirmed. pretty much any cold air/ram air systems are going to need a tune or they run like garbage. the tune will take care of the erratic/failing idle

To reitorate what was stated the car must run the supplied fan shield. Did you buy this new from us or used? If used and you did not get a fan shield we can sell you one for the car.

IN addition as was stated some cars done react well to the intake without a tune so the car can react a bit erratic. A tune is always a good idea

Does the car have a tune on it already? If it did adding the intake will only make that problem worse.

I think that you just need to get the intake shield..

I don't think that this is as much of a tune related problem, as it is the hot air getting blown into the open element filter..

You will want to make sure you get the shield on the intake or else the radiator fan will blow directly into the MAF causing an erratic idle surge. If the intake doesn't use the factory MAF housing. It's going to need a tune. The MAF must be rescaled to run correctly.

** The factory MAF housing is the black piece between the filter and pipe. If the MAF is directly on a 3.0" pipe, it must be retuned.

Thanks!

Michael

I worked on an Evo X last year with an AMS intake all you need is the Shield man Problem solved along with a tune.

I've had some experience there with some of my previous sports cars and when applying the additional air your changing the combustion so are fuel ratios might need to be changed.

For example some cold air intake manufactures make intakes that require no tune and some that specifically require a tune but those that do are generally the best as they will ultimately provide more HP.

I installed mine about 2 months ago and before i used the cobb ap tune did the exact same thing all you need is a simple mild tune. my idle has always been a little off the intake actually helped a little.

I have a 2011 GSR with the AMS short ram and I have zero issues with idle. However the 2011s have a better tune from the factory.
When I had my 2008 with my AGP intake it idled like garbage until i flashed my ecu. Get a tune and call it a day. They gave you the heat shield for a reason..
