Increasing top speed?

I know gear changes can increase the top speed, but what about basic bolt ons and tune? Lets say with a 100 hp gain, would you see any increase in the top speed? Im not asking this with "stupidity" because I do know pretty much all that would happen with the basic bolt ons, you would just get to top speed or any speed faster, but "maybe" not increase the top speed at all or by much. I was just wondering how the Evo reacts to basic bolt ons and tune. And FYI, I havent even went faster than 80 mph in my car, so im not trying to do anything.

your power (against drag) and your rev. limiter is the main factor for your top speed with any transmission.

It depends what your current top speed is limited by.

For example:

Power; my 96 lancer could reach 170kmh, at 6k+RPM in 3rd (AT) it just ran out of oomph. To increase the top speed, power mods or aerodynamic improvements could be added.

Speed cut; a JDM spec evo comes with a limit of 180 kmh from the factory. To improve the top speed, get a tune or use ecuflash yourself and increase the speed limit value.

Rev limit; if you are accelerating in top gear you will eventually hit your rev limit. To improve your top speed, increase your rev limit (WARNING: NOT GOOD FOR YOUR CAR) or modify your transmission.

haha, ironic i just found this. I been messing around with ecuflash and i just raised my speed limit to 500kmh (i know i wont ever go that fast). Also raised my rev limit up 200rpm so i wont bounce off it when im at the track.

310mph is nothing. You should have raised it to over 9000

the other day i was reading on evo x that the top speed on the evo x mr was gear limited. 272kph top of the last gear at redline. so you'd need to get new 6th gear that would allow you to go faster.. not saying that you could.. it's like pushing the top gear of a bicycle.. if your not strong enough then you'll go no where.

GSR's are definitely limited by the gear ratio. Stock rev limiter will only get you to 165ish if I'm remembering my highway RPM correctly.

^ You are correct, 7000 rpm in 5th is ~160mph. An unmodded GSR will reach that speed, a modded one will reach the same speed sooner. There is a higher final drive available which will increase top speed.

In short, we are gear/rpm limited, not power limited.

Sheptrans offers a package for our trans that changes the gear ratios and final drive. See Ryan Gates at the Texas Mile... he trapped 180 with that trans.

My bone stock GSR did 167mph and I got passed by a Merc SLR like I was standing still. But a little passed 165 you lose the oomph still had a little pedal left. Thought about raising the limiter in the ECU and testing top end again. (DISCLAIMER) I have the autobahn to play on.

GSR is gear-limited, not power.

Speedo error too, plays a role. Accuracy at 65 mph does not necessarily mean the speedo is accurate at 165. Car is gear/ rev limited and so you can easily do the math to see how accurate your speedo is at, say 130. 167 is the top speed at, IIRC, 7200 rpm 5th gear with a stock final drive.

Try doing that here in the US and you might as well be the anti-christ. Shame the Germans lost...
