600 miles in - leather wrinkle/cracking defect?

I only have 600 miles on my 2011 GSR which I purchased 3 weeks ago from South Coast Mitsubishi and noticed wrinkles on the leather steering wheel the first day I drove it off the lot. Not bugging me much, I shrugged it off and didn't think much of it... However as days passed, I have noticed that the leather has gotten a LOT worse and is starting to slightly crack in certain places. (See pic)

This is definitely a manufacturers defect, correct? The car is spankin brand new!

Mine looks fine still and it's a 2008 with 40k miles.

That shouldn't be normal.

I think mine looks the same as yours (2.5k miles). I will check and take a pic in the morning. I had bought an Outlander sport brand new as well. It uses the same steering wheel and I'm pretty sure it did the same thing. Mitsu isnt really known for quality when it comes to fit and finish. You might get a dealership to replace it. But odds are they will call it normal wear and tear.

That is some BULLWAX. I'm definitely gonna try to get it covered under warranty. I've had the car for less than 3 weeks!

They just don't make cows like they use to......

Let us know. I really think its normal for our years Evo. And I've had my share of Mitsu and freaking warranty work. I wouldnt want to get warranty work done unless I absolutely have to. I think there might be a good chance that even if you get them to replace it under warranty it just might happen again. Like I said, I'll check mine. But pretty sure my Evo and Outlander is/was the same

Well the car is not brand new per say its been sitting on a car lot since the build date which is over a year ago im guessing? I would say put some leather treatment on it and see if that helps any. You should bring it in and see what they say though. I have a 2012 and mine does not look like that. Good Luck. Damn cows.

I dunno about you... but my 2009 leather wheel looks fine after 52000 miles. (actually you can see i's 51526 miles and 2800 miles since my last oil change hehe)

I do wipe it down with leather cleaner and condition it every 6 months with the same leather conditioner wax that I use for my hiking boots though.

But to be fair, it's been tight and smooth since day 1. Yours looks more... rustic.

Sweaty hands gripping the wheel. Loosen up a bit.

yeah i hate to say it but that is from a sweaty hand gripping leather and friction going across it. You will get laughed at for bringing it in. Salt from sweat will dry out leather, friction tugging on it will then cause it to wrinkle. Wear driving gloves maybe, use some leather conditioner and all too, best thing you can do if you have sweaty hands.
