Broken stud on turbo?

Ok, I used the word stud because I am not sure how the downpipe mounts to the Turbo. But I called a local shop about getting the AMS downpipe installed. They gave me the cost but then he said he had to warn me that "sometimes the stud breaks off when installing and they would have to send the turbo out" Kind of put the fear in me only because I can't be without my car. I google searched it and I do see it has happened to others but am wondering if you were an odds maker what would put them at on this happening on a 2012 that has been in So Cal it's whole life and has only seen rain a couple of times?

Thanks

I took mine off for the first time on my Evo 8 a couple months ago i just took my time and used a ton of penetrating spray. Mine came off without breaking but the nut still cross threaded on its way off so they are a pain either way. Its probably pretty common so just expect the worst and hope for the best.

Find another shop. I had this happen, I would soak the bolts in pb blaster ahead of time, regardless and I'm sure a little map gas torch action to heat things up wouldnt hurt. However mine broke, I pulled the the manifold, then turbine housing, with the turbo only unbolted from the 2 mounts from the block (turbine housing and compressor housing) and took the turbine housing to a friend who spent an hour drilling the bolt out, retapped the threads and it was back together the next day. A good shop with drill press could do all of this. Yes it's a pain but dont get bent by having something "sent out". A drill press is standard issue for a real shop, that an a 10.00 cobalt bit is all thats needed.

It is not a matter of salt environment (a factor for sure!) but also the corrosive exhaust gas, and mostly, the number of heat cycles that makes it such a beotch to remove...

I second the PB blaster soak over night and be careful...

PB Blaster and a shop that cares and you'll be fine. Any shop that has to send a turbo out due to a broken stud is not a shop you should deal with.
