Shopping this summer but I need a winter car

So my wife is finally letting me shop for a second car. She can drive the Santa Fe, and this one is for me.

I'm looking for a daily driver that won't leave me cold every time I take it out of the driveway, but it has to survive perhaps the crappiest city in the world for driving, Winnipeg.

The issues here are long, brutally cold winters. Lots of snow, and roads that aren't always plowed in a timely manner. This results in ice covered roads that can quickly develop 4"-6" deep wheel ruts. In the summer, it gets hot and the pavement cracks and develops a plethora of potholes from the crazy temperature differences we see in spring and fall.

So, I'm curious to get the opinion of other Evo drivers who deal with similar winter climates and drive year-round. I'm hoping that a good set of winter tires on steel rims will be enough to keep the Evo on my short list.

Thanks!

^ it will

I just drove through some crazy road conditions for the past couple months on some blizzaks lm-60s. I was the only vehicle on an ice covered mountain pass road with over 10" of fresh powder to not be having any trouble (helped an suv out of a ditch, and drove the family of a guy in a pickup out after i watched him almost spin out off the mountain).

my only concern would be the 6" deep wheel ruts. The car sits pretty low and you might hit the front lip. If it is truly solid ice it could do some damage.

Honestly though, after experiencing the evo on snow tires in the winter i wouldn't want any other vehicle to drive in snowy conditions.

Just got through the first winter in my X. I'm also on the blizzak lm60 like dawg. Milwaukee roads are TERRIBLE and we definitely got some good snow fall this year. We still are... :/

With some dedicated snow tires for winter, i'd think you'd be really impressed. Those deep ruts would make me nervous but, I have pushed through some pretty serious stuff too. Granted, i'm still on stock suspension so monster truck mode certainly helps.

There are no steel rims for Evo Xs with OE brakes. Well, other than getting 3 extra spares....

The ruts might cause a clearance issue and rip off the bumper. Snow and ice not a problem - have driven though it, even on all-seasons the Evo does well. BUT.....if there is hardpack that is too deep......

The ruts are not an all-winter thing, normally they are only there for a few days until the plows can get out and scrape. If it's solid packed ice they will leave it down but that doesn't sound like an issue.

Well, time to decide if I want the GSR or MR now
