Leave them on. It actually helps the Airflow of the car. Don't know how Drastic it is, But Mitsu placed them there for a reason.

Fmic acts as a giant air dam. Without those pieces, the air will tend to go around the fmic instead of through it.

1) I believe that the thread-starter is asking how to remove them if he or she has to in order to get the new FMIC (and/or its piping) to fit.

2) While I agree that the piece on the right side has a reason (namely, to increase airflow to the oil cooler), I'm not sure if the reason for the left-side piece isn't as simple as appearance.

Well, that can't be the whole story since those pieces are vents, not solid.

OHHHHH i see. Well he Shouldn't need to remove them in order to change the FMIC. That piece is attached to the bumper.

Heres a pic of my car when i took off the bumper. No vents in sight http://instagram.com/p/XfvZQ5ScuT/

Unless he is putting a FMIC any bigger then 4 inches, there is NO CUTTING OR TRIMMING OF ANYTHING.

im very well aware of mitsubishis design intent and in fact they do serve a purpose. as an engineer myself i know all this. was just curious as it looks soo so much better with an open bumper. guess im totally leaning against my whole design goals for this car if i were to remove them. just wanted to know if they needed to be cut out is all incase i wanted to be one of those guys who wants more show > function.

dont do it unless you have a stenciled style dmic..and the under tray. i had it on mine and ended up going back with the plastic pieces. it helps flow the air straight to the fmic. instead of just rushing air everywhere.

You're an engineer and you can't figure out if they're removable?
