Amsoil - 5W-30 or 10W-30 - NJ

Hi all -

I've read through a couple threads on the thought process behind using 5W-30 versus 10W-30. One of these articles I read explains the difference fairly well - http://micapeak.com/info/oiled.html.

I recently got my transmission, differential, transfer case, and oil changed by IveyTune. Sean said that he typically puts in 10W-30 in Evos for a little extra protection with a bit of sacrifice in MPG. I've actually been getting 25-26MPG regardless for the last couple of thousand miles on my tune, so I'm happy.

With that said, I just bought 10W-30 Amsoil to continue following the weight recommendation from Sean. I'm in NJ and I'm wondering if you guys think I should return the oil for 5W-30 since it's going to get cold in the next couple of months?

From what I can see, 5W-30 is typically better in slightly higher subzero temperatures than 10W-30 due to the viscosity.

Anyone have any input? Thanks.

in a colder weather you can use the 5-30 and when its get hot you can use 10-30. If extremely hot or track use ( medium level) you can even go 10-40.

Thanks. Anyone have other input? I'll probably just exchange the 10W-30 for 5W-30 as that was my original inclination. Although I'm curious to hear some other opinions.

The AMSOIL 10w30 flows in cold very well, here is the spec for pour point.

Pour Point °C (°F) (ASTM D-97)
-48 (-54)

Would you recommend 5W-30 over 10W-30 for 20-30F temperatures?

I ended up getting Amsoil 5W-30 with a Mobil 1 extended performance oil filter. I plan on running this oil through the winter. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I always run 5-30 in the winter when temps are between 15-30 degrees F, and 10-30 during the summer when temps usually range between 85-95 F

Either is fine... if you noticed the 10w30 flows well in negative temps

if this is the amsoil signature line, they make a 0w-30. seems like overkill but i wouldn't mind if they made a 0w-40 (amo or dominator only)

I use 10w-30 all year around and have not had any problems.
25-26 MPG, are you even boosting to get that MPG?

I'm getting the 25-26 MPG with strictly highway driving.

I'm running mobil 1 5w40 in my evo x. Its listed for turbo diesel applications, but I run it in a lot of turbocharged gasoline applications. You could also run the 0w40. Over years of experience with high horsepower forced induction cars, I am a firm believer in synthetic heavier weight oil.
