New Evo, starting issues...

Hi everyone,
Picked up a brand new GSR in Oct 2013 with 1570 miles so far and K & N intake. I have noticed that I occasionally/randomly have trouble starting. It cranks fine but once turns over the idles are low and sounds like it going to die but doesn't. This will last for a second or two and then the car runs fine. I am new to turbocharged cars especially the operation of them in the winter (I let it warm until the coolant gauge registers and then drive like a grandma until fully warmed). This is also the first car that I've owned requiring 93 octane gas which is what I use. Could it just be the cold weather? Is 93 octane harder to detonate at first in the cold? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

that's just an electronic choke due to the cold weather. Evo's are still a little hod-roddish in their ways (kinda clunky shifting, starts funny in the cold, etc), but it's not anything bad. Another issue could be "winter blend" fuel, which in cold weather areas may have a different mixture of ethanol in the winter time.

Also, you can run 91 just fine.

I'm also a new Evo owner - no mods. In the winter I notice a higher idle at start most of the time. When it's very cold (below zero), it some times a bit rough when starting. It works itself out over maybe 10 seconds. I dont think it's related to the octane of the fuel.

I think it is cold weather because nothing unusual happened in the summer.

yeah, winter blend fuel. Here, the E85 is more like E70 in the winter

My car does the same thing. I wouldn't worry about it unless your car actually starts shutting off.
