Just the Facts:
Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 146 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart cars because the power steering pressure tube may chafe, resulting in leaking fluid and increasing the risk of a fire.
The automaker told federal safety regulators it is "unaware of any injuries and/or accidents related to this issue."
Recall notices are on the way to owners.
WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 146 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart cars because the power steering pressure tube may chafe, resulting in leaking fluid and increasing the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The affected vehicles may have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the cross-member brace," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Due to abrasion and rust, a hole may develop in the power steering tube, allowing the fluid to leak out, resulting in added steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash.
"Additionally, the leaking fluid increases the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source, such as a hot engine or exhaust component."
The automaker told federal safety regulators it is "unaware of any injuries and/or accidents related to this issue."
The affected Lancer Evolution cars were built from January 31, 2014 through February 21, 2014. The affected Lancer Ralliart cars were built from February 3, 2014 through February 14, 2014.
The problem was discovered during routine testing.
Mitsubishi dealers will inspect the power steering tube for sufficient clearance. If the vehicle has insufficient clearance, the power steering tube assembly will be replaced.
Recall notices are on the way to owners, according to the company. Owners can contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.
Edmunds says: If you own one of these cars, it's time to contact your dealer to schedule an appointment.

oh yeah, those 2010 have no problems, what with relays, stretched timing chains and all....
Why would the PS lines change design this late in the production cycle? What are the lines being replaced with? New parts with more clearance, or old parts with more clearance?
