So last night the evo took a dirt nap on my at 5k rpm in 4th gear. From what I can tell one of the rods broke and went right trough the back of the block obviously I'm going to rebuild it but I'm afraid to put stock internals back in it, are they really this weak or could this have been a freak thing. I'm realitivily new to the evo scene and have only had the car 6 months. It does have the basic bolt ons including
-turbo back exhaust
-3" intercooler and all piping
-CAI intake
-and a tune from a very reputable shop
Any insight from you guys with more experience would be very help full, at this point I'm thinking I should put forged internals in it just for the reliability. I'm not looking to make more power, I just don't want this to happen again.
Well before you worry about internals you're going to need a new block. How much power and torque were you making? I have 80k miles on my stock block and am running 355whp and 355wtq and have 0 issues
Had the same thing happen to me at 45K, same mods, bought a built lower end and the machine shop said the head was still good. Pricey fix, worse part is cylinder shot into my transfer case and cracked it in the back so had to get a new T case as well. Let me know what the cause was, chain stretch maybe and you skipped a tooth...or 3. If you want more info on where I got my lower end let me know I still have the receipt somewhere. I believe we already have forged internals, if you wanna get beefier H rods, crankshaft or sleeve the cylinder thats another story. Typically these motors can make around 400 tq until you start seeing stress on them, although the hole in my old motor tells a diff story.

My car wasn't anywhere near the limit though:/ If you do find the receipt please post it up, any info right now is helpful. If I can get some down time at the shop next week i'll get the motor torn down and see what the cause was. At this point I'm thinking about going with stronger internals and going over everything with a fine tooth comb.

355 tq 392hp from what I was told by the previous owner, and the car has remained been at this power level since the engine finished it's break in period. It recently got really cold here in VA, I'm wondering if it leaned out a bit and also spiked boost to high at the same time (kaaboom).
its really about how your drive it and once your TBH the tune plays a big part.
you should read the blown engine thread as I think you will find you answer there.
I have a few questions though:
1. are you the frist owner(>.<)
2. what do you know about the tune? do you have the paper work? ( if you're not the first owner just tell you so-n-so did the tune?)
I am the third owner, 1st was a rich CEO who had it built by Moore automotive in N. VA,
second was a guy who daily drove it on the highway 80 miles or so a day. I"m sure he had some fun now and again the same as do.
- I do have all AEM gauges (afr, boost, water temp)
- I had an appointment to get a re-tune after the car stalled out on me for no reason just driving down the highway, the tune has always seemed a little lean at full boost (11.5).
- To be honest I really think it leaned out and/ or over boosted
Moore is a damn good tuner, and I'd take it back to them to diagnose. Definitely sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. The 4b11 is generally a very capable engine, I'm interested to see what the cause ends up being.

It really does suck, I own a shop and will have a used motor on the way soon just to get the car driving again. I'm going to tear down this blown motor and do a full build on it with a new block and forged internals, then swap it back in once the warranty is out on the used motor. 3 yrs or so on the warranty should give me plenty of time to get a nice built motor together
