I don't know anyone that has needed to swap out differentials on their VIII or IX at that power level, so it surprises me that a X needs it.
It would be surprising, because it doesn't need it

Gotcha. I will disregard the other guy's post.
That explains why everyone told me I was crazy LOL. "Don't believe everything you read on the internet".

Haha I love forums, because there is a lot of good information. Definitely a lot of...less good information too though!

Since you internet forum rockstars know everything there is to know about everything how can I compete? Especially since all of you are running 450-600 whp DD on stock drivetrains with no repercussions?

OP these are great cars but I suggest you do some of your own research and see for yourself. Perhaps the engine/drivetrain forum and spend a few month reading like I did before I bought my GSR.

Ill even help you and give a thread to wet your search whistle:

Good luck

Hey now no need to get nasty. Never have I claimed to know everything there is about anything.

The fact is, 450 whp is stock frame turbo upgrade territory, and you don't need to do much of anything to your drivetrain to handle that.

Torque kills drivetrains, not horsepower.

OP, just have your work done with a reputable tuner (who knows Evo's), and you'll be fine. X's are very stout cars all around with responsible modding and tuning.

There is a guy, 370zforme on YouTube running 670WHP on a stock transmission other than a clutch so.....his torque is below 500 and that is why there are no problems.

In all honesty, I was being facetious and seeing if he would stand by his comment.
It bugs me a bit when people spread info that is untrue. At least add qualifiers to the statement.
Otherwise, you have some new guy needlessly dropping $1000's on drivetrain parts just because he installed an FP Green with a tune.

I'm okay with someone recommending a course of action as a safety measure or matter of opinion, but don't tell someone it has to be done when it doesn't.

Or maybe I'm tripping, because his post seems different now.

I haven't changed or edited anything in this thread. If you read my posts carefully youll see I've never stated you "had to" or that the X drivetrain is "weak." Other people in this thread have injected that. Perhaps they didn't thoroughly read what I wrote, or got a little "enthusiastic" due to their loyalty to the Evo and X in particular. Whatever.

So.....a couple of the guys in this thread have probably forgotten more about turning the X than I'll ever know. But, I've owned an X for 7 years. I owned and drove a 03 WRX for 6 years before that. Which means I've been driving turbocharged AWD cars for 13 years. Longer than some members have driving. It doesn't mean I know everything. But it means I know some things. And I know this: for under 70,000-100,000 dollars you'll be hard pressed to find a better all around, affordable, dependable high performance car.

But I also know the timing chain, the AWD pump (that's what the dealer is calling it these days) are issues that MIGHT need to be addressed, and the trans, center diff, and rear end are things that some times needs to be built to handle high whp if you're going to drag race or DD and by DD I mean guys who are getting their foot on it hard all the time and are 450+ whp. And I base this upon people I know personally who race VIII, IX, and X. And what I've read here. And by what my tuner tells me.

You're experience may vary.

The Evo is still an awesome car which is why I bought one. And seem to be having a hard time replacing. I love mine. But its getting older. Which means I might need to think about replacing it while it still has a lot of value. Or build it which I'm seriously considering, and buying a 2nd car to DD and for the winter. I've put 106,000 miles on mine and just now had to replace the timing chain. I'm not mad. That's just cars. High performance cars no less.

If you guys want to run around and tell everyone you can drag race or DD 450-600whp with no issues (longterm) or improvements to the stock drivetrain go right ahead. Thats just not my experience. But then again read the sticky about the transmission gripes/problems everyone seems to have had since 2008. Its still going strong trust me. But thats not my experience either. Mine has been flawless but then again I've driven a LOT of manual transmissions over the years to compare it to.

But I reserve the right to disagree with you somewhat, and share my experience as well.

I'll admit to not reading all of your post, but I think this is all anyone needs to see. 😀

Also, there is a world of difference between 450whp you mention here:

And 600whp that you are now referring to.

And of course we all have our own opinions and experiences, so yours is respected also.

I.E. I think someone that breaks at a drag strip deserves what they get. It's an Evo, not a Mustang LOL.

Okay, not really, but I don't understand drag racing an Evo.

I'm telling ya. What are the options if you really want a drivers car?

Seriously I've looked at it all: used Corvette, Viper, CTS-V, M3, Mustang, S13-14, Boxter and more......

Evo just have a special place in my heart.

Ya initially I said 450+ since we're mincing words. Someone else then brought up a 600whp DD if I remember correctly which is why I brought that up later on.

But seriously guys do what you want! Its not like I own stock in frikken Kozmic, Sheps, or Jacks.

agreed. i've driven and owned lots of vehicles, but none of them fit me like the Evo. it does all the things i need from a car. it may not be for everyone, but perfect for me.
i needed something that i could take my kid in, maybe some adults. it needed a solid roof for safety's sake (the kid, again). i wanted it to make decent power and handle well enough to be fun.
the fact that it did all that VERY well, is a turbo car, and looks amazing (IMO),... well, it was a no-brainer. i can carry a family along for a road trip AND set fastest time of the day at the local autox or track day.
there are only one or two cars i'd rather have but i can't afford to buy nor maintain either. LOL
i'm lucky to have found THE car for me. it's nice to not be buying/selling cars every couple of years haha.

don't get us wrong: we're not trying to split hairs for the sake of arguing. when there is a person looking for advice and/or trying to learn something about these cars, we need to be clear on the advice we're giving. when you tell someone they need to rebuild their drivetrain at 450whp, he may take that info, run with it, and drop a few pointless $1000s. it's a lot different than saying that you would "as a precaution", "in your opinion", "just in case", etc.

so we're just pointing that out to OP, so he doesn't think his car is gonna crap out it's t-case or rear end LOL

Right. I didn't even bring that part up as it seemed the OP was younger and might not have family? But I have friends that will say things like "man, I wish I could drive an Evo but I have kids" as mine is parked in their driveway, and my minions running around their yard haha. Even better when the entire brood is in the car, texting on their phones, auxed to my stereo playing their "music" and I'm at a red light next to a guy in his minivan looking at me with what I can only assume is regret and envy haha.

and the BEST part is (if someone is into racing their Evo), beating Ferrari's at AutoX, GTRs at Time Attack, and lots of other expensive cars.

i'm not saying the Evo is god's gift to cars, just that Mitsu got LUCKY (or engineered?) and did something right here. what a great car at an awesome price.
the only car i've been so impressed with is my old Integra Type R. Honda hit the nail on the head when building the suspension for their EG/EK/DC2 platforms. be it engineering or luck there? i dunno, but it worked.
