Post To use cheap parts or stick to OEM for rebuild?

Hey guys! I just picked up my evo a few days ago and unfortunately I found out the idle/stalling issue was not because the car was badly tuned but because it has bent valves. Did a leak down test and it was almost 60% leak in every cylinder (ouch) air leaking into other cylinders, intake and out the exhaust.

I will be sending in the head to get a valve job done but my question is are there any specific parts that need to be OEM that you shouldn't cheap out on? I will be replacing valves/head gasket/timing belt/timing belt tensioner/cam seals/valve cover gasket/plugs etc along with all fluids (coolant, oil, trans, diff, transfer case)

Are there other things I should watch for on these cars or replace since I have it all apart already?

Thanks in advance for your help!

This does belong in the evo 1-9 section, but anyways.

Bent valves? The engine most likely wouldn't even start up due to the valves not moving and slapping the pistons. Maybe the seals just got worn out or something, you'd be surprised how easy it is to get down to 60%.

As for what to replace with OEM, I would say shop around for OEM vs aftermarket and go with quality aftermarket parts where you can, since anything OEM will automatically be priced higher than it should be. Always better to have good quality aftermarket performance parts in case you decide to build it up one day.

Shop around for good aftermarket parts, usually they are better and cheaper than OEM.

valves = Ferrea
gasket = Cometic or HKS
timing belt = Greddy or Gates
Pistons = Wiseco, Ross, JE..... you choose
Rods = Eagle, Scat....

What best suits you..!!

Good luck with your built.

Valves were bent on the exhaust side and guides were bad, had the machine shop do whatever they had to do to make it run again, unsure what valves they used but they were familiar with the 4G63. As far as parts ordered I went OEM on everything, thanks for the help!
