Sweet key difference
Sweet key difference
Hi,
I got an Evo X FE 2016 and my buddy got an Evo X MR 2008. We tried to use the keys (the metal one, not the smart key set) to start our cars, but we got different results.
So, let's say, the smart key's battery is dead. We have to start our cars by using the metal keys:
1. We are sure my buddy's smart key's battery is dead. He used the metal key to open his car's door. Then, the alarm was triggered. He inserted the metal key to the key hole and started his car successfully. After that, the alarm was off and the car was on.
2. We are sure my smart key fob is working, so I left it in my room and only took the metal key to the experiment. I did the same thing on my FE, but I cannot start my car. The alarm was alway on even after I exit the car and locked it from outside. I had to fetch my fob and lock my car, so the alarm can go off.
Is everything working as they are supposed to? Is MR's alarm system different from FE's?
Then, I started to worry - how am I suppose to start my FE after a few years when the fob's battery is dead...
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yea to be fair it gives you a warning for like a month or so when the battery is getting low...so I guess if your that lazy you get what you deserve. And even when you think the fob is dead I bet if you had it in the car it may actually allow you to start the car. There still may be a weak signal. Did you try leaving your buddys key fob in another room and try to start his car?
If your FOB is dead, you use the metal key to start the car. The difference is that you have to connect the FOB to the end of the metal key (reverse it) and insert it into the ignition to start it. So yes, your FE would work if the FOB was on the key before trying to start the vehicle.
I know this because I've had to start my '09 Lancer when the FOB died. The alarm went off, but the car wouldn't start with just the metal key; I had to place the FOB at the end and then start the car.

I did have a problem with my keyfob 2 weeks after i purchased my FE. My fob wiuld not work to unlock the car either with the buttons on the fob or the buttons on the handle. I opened it with the key alarm went of, out the fob on the key like i was supposed to and car still would not start, key oiuldnt even turn. After about 10 minutes of my alarm going off at work I gave up and as i was walking away tried it one more time for sh*ts and giggles and it worked. Never figured out what happened mitsu could tell me anything and it hasnt happened since.

There is a little depiction of this on the metal part of the key. This is because the rfid chip is in the key fob, and without detecting that (which works even without battery) the car won't allow you to start it.
My guess is your buddies key was still being detected as present, where-as your key being far away meant the car assumed you were trying to steal it.
All's good. As was said, it's in the owners manual and is probably important to know
