dealership warranty

My evo X threw a rod, and now I'm hoping to get it fixed by a dealership since it's still under warranty. The only problem is that it might've been tuned by the previous owner, which would void the warranty.

Any advice on what else to look out for so that I don't get rejected at the door?

If it was previously tuned, be prepared to put up a fight to get it covered.

Curious what the cause of the thrown rod is? At stock power levels, that's super uncommon...

That's the risk you run when you buy cars that have been modified by the previous owner. You're best bet is to put a stock map on and take it and hope they don't check to see how many times it's been flashed.

Cylinder 2 had low compression and I think it's safe to say that's what triggered it.

I'm kinda leaning towards buying a short block and having a shop install it to save me from all the hassle. But it would be nice to not have to pay at all

Yeah that's true. But that entails getting it towed, possibly getting a stock tune on it, and throwing on the stock parts

It just had a turboback. I'm sure the previous owner had done other stuff to it because it had a bunch of stickers in the interior

never buy a car that has a bunch of stickers on the interior lol... Well man flash it back to stock tow it in and see what happens. Although they can tell if its been flashed before...so maybe you will luck out and they wont bother checking. But our warranty is notoriously dodgy at best though..

If there were ever words to live by it is this. In general, most that buy and die to have these cars treat them like absolute ****, getting one close to stock is the best you can hope for. Are there a good deal of owners that modify their cars and treat them right on here? Absolutely, but that is not the majority of used Evo's on the market.

I think you are in for a hell of a fight to get this covered through warranty, best of luck to you.

I wouldn't bother taking the turbo-back exhaust back to stock, the exhaust isn't going to affect you throwing a rod so they can't really argue that. Your best bet is to flash back to stock and pray the dealer doesn't check.

On a side note, do you know if the previous owner had the car re-tuned after putting it at only the turbo-back exhaust? If he had it tuned with all his other mods, and didn't re-tune after removing them, you could be looking at an AFR issue causing some detonation which could throw a rod with no problem.

Don't even waste your time. No way the dealership will cover you. Find a GOOD shop that knows the EVO and have them fix you up. Sucks, but that's the way it will go even if you waste your time and take it to a dealership.

Also you learned a valuable and timeless lesson:

When buying a car, any performance car, and you aren't sure if it has had parts (you pretty much knew), take it to a tuner and have them check it out and dyno it to ensure the tune is good.

I think you just bought it and started driving it hard...
