Premature bearing wear seems to be common from the bearings that are pulled as preventative maintenance but I don't think the overall failure rate is all that high. What worries me is there is no conclusive evidence as to what actually causes the issue.
It seems very hit or miss. Some cars with multiple track days and 200K+ miles that have had no issues on original bearings... while others failed at <10K. I wouldn't discount driving habbits from being a big factor either (lugging the engine, especially before warmed up).
I'd probably budget for replacing them if looking for one w/ no warranty intact... and make sure to get regular UOAs done. I think I may be talking myself out of wanting one

Both are these are on my short list. I traded a 2005 4Runner in on my Evo. I've had the Evo a little over 5 years now. When the new 4Runner finally comes out (2 years???) I'll be ready to move on. I hope they keep the 4Runner body on frame etc...
