Evo X Massive Oil Leak Yesterday, Nothing Today

I started me 2015 Evo X FE for the first time in 4 months yesterday and it had a massive oil leak. Probably half a quart in the 5 minutes it was running. I jacket it up this morning, took off the pan to access the filter and drain plug and it was flooded with oil. I cleaned it off and started the car and I have no drips of any sort. Let it run for 20 minutes and nothing. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

The car has never leaked any oil before yesterday. Any ideas? I’m going to drive it around the block and see what happens.

It came from the passenger side so much that my passenger side front tire went through the puddle when backing out of my garage. It appears to be near the oil filter. I am wondering if I could have left the old gasket on when I replaced it in January. Just don’t know why the leak would go away so abruptly.

I would just change the oil again and check the filter. Definitely odd.

It was oil though correct? Not gear oil?

In case anyone else has the same issue, it looks like the K&N oil filter was the source. Apparently you are not supposed to use the hex nut on the end for ANY tightening, only loosening.

I’m guessing I used the nut to tighten it, which deformed the shell of the oil filter causing it to leak. Lesson learned.
