TWM Performance Short Throw Shifter on a 2010 Evo X

I just installed a TWM Performance Short Throw Shifter on my 2010 Evo X, and I figured I would write a install of the process on a 2010.

I'm going to follow the instructions given with the shifter, which you can get here:
http://www.twmperformance.com/manual...all-manual.pdf

I am mainly going to point out what is different on the 2010, and where the instructions are different.

First I will show you what you get:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0075.jpg
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0076.jpg

Here is my stock shifter, but I forgot to take after pictures of the same view.
First:

Second:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0079.jpg

The first thing I found different on the 2010 is this:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0081.jpg

We have an AWC button where as the 2008 has a Small Storage Compartment.

So all you do is remove the piece and unplug the button from underneath:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0082.jpg

Here is my stock shifter:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0083.jpg

Next, they forgot to tell us to remove this thing. I'm not sure what it is, but it comes out easy, just pinch the tabs together.
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0084.jpg

Here is the carnage so far:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0085.jpg

Shifter Removed:
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0097.jpg

Now I tested the play in the rubber bushings, and I could barely get it to move at all. I didn't get the aluminum bushings, and I don't think they are needed right now. They may be needed in the future, as my Evo only has 500 miles on it. So you might want them if you don't want to take this thing apart again in the future.

Here are some comparison shots of the 2 shifters. Stock is grey, TWM is black.
Notice how the stock one bends toward the rear of the car. The TWM does not have this bend, but it's not needed after the throw is shortened.
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0098.jpg

Here you can see how the TWM is offset toward the drivers side. This is a very good thing.
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0099.jpg

This one shows the different offsets of the center pivot ball. You can see what makes the TWM a shorter throw.
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0100.jpg

The TWM does not modify the left to right throw, as illustrated by this picture. It is a very good thing.
http://i746.photobucket.com/albums/x...0/CIMG0101.jpg

Now for re-assembly. Here is how I put back on the spring. It's real simple to just twist it on.

Driving:
This thing is awesome. I love the way my car shifts now. My 3rd gear click / grind thing is gone. I don't know how anyone can drive one of these cars without this shifter.

It took me just over an hour to install this, which includes taking pictures and messing around with the new shifter.

Well thats all. :-)

Great write up and great pics.

Thanks!!{thumbup}

Great write up! I just did the install last weekend myself. Your right...I don't know how anyone can drive with the stock shifter setup. This feels so much more natural and the way it should of been from the factory.

Awesome writeup! Thanks alot for your order again and I'll be taking note of the extra plug for the 2010's.

Man, that short shifter looks real nice. How much does this cost?

evolvedx Nov 20, 2009 12:08 PM

This guy is one of the transponders for the FAST key. It also existed in the 2008's. It does come out just by using a pair of needlenose to pinch the tabs like you said. The car they used to create the instructions didn't have the FAST key on it.

tsitalon1 Nov 20, 2009 12:29 PM

Interesting how it changed the feel of third to you. My Shep worked tranny is still notchy into 3rd. I always wondered if shifter adjustment would clear it up..

Can you post back after a few hundread miles and let me know for sure if it cleared up your 3rd gear issue?

Very nice write up and thanks for using a ruler and showing the difference. Kudos

Golden Nov 30, 2009 08:22 AM

1200 miles on her now. (600+ more than this write up)

Third gear still feels great. When its cold out (40's), it sometimes clicks into third, but never feels like it did before. I used to do incomplete shifts in third ( where I didn't get it quite in third gear and it would grind a bit an hit neutral), but that has never happened since.

I didn't get the shifter to fix the third gear issue, but it sure is an added bonus.

pure_butane Nov 30, 2009 08:48 PM

hi guys im new to the community and this is a great write up to come in on, love it. i just have a question for you what are the Shifter Base Bushings for and why would you need them, thanks for any input.

Golden Nov 30, 2009 09:38 PM

The shifter base bushings allow the base of the shifter to float / not be mounted 100% to the chassis.

If you look at my photos, you will see a white cage that the shifter sits in. That is the shifter base. The bushings mount between it and the bolt that holds it down. The stock bushings are rubber, where as TWM's bushings are aluminum.

The idea is to replace the stock rubber bushings with aluminum ones to remove slop from the shifter. There are also similar bushings under the hood, where the shift linkage attaches to the transmission.

I did not replace these, so I cannot speak to how they feel.

pure_butane Nov 30, 2009 09:52 PM

where did you buy yours from btw thanks for the help.

great write up,wow.....I now know what I want for christmas :)

novaspyder87 Dec 1, 2009 05:49 AM

pretty weard that the shifter is only 1,5 inches less than the stock one. but it decrease the distance from first gear to second gear by more than 1,5 inches :)

novaspyder87 Dec 1, 2009 05:49 AM

oups sorry the shifter is shorter by only .8 inches....my bad

The shorter shifts come from the relocated pivot point and not from the actual reduced height of the shifter :)

As for the base bushing and cable bushings, they make an awesome difference. Like the OP posted, they remove the play that is found with the OEM rubber bushings. I've personally tried the short shifter with the base bushings and the difference is incredible. It feels so much more direct and connected! If anyone orders them I'm sure they will feel noticeable changes in the feel of the shift assembly!

The effort required to engage gears is slightly more then stock. It's barely even noticeable. The EVO X shifter is one of our best selling products and people always love the feel!

artnsx Dec 1, 2009 01:46 PM

the added effort in shifting is hardly noticable

I have had the TWM shifter for about 300 miles too. Its awesome. And i would highly recommend the bushings if you order this.

I played around with the shifter once I got it in and left the stock bushings in and I was expecting it to shift fairly smooth. It was not as smooth as I was expecting at all tho. Then I drove back and put the bushings in and it shifted much smoother. They make a big difference. This totally took away my 3rd gear grinding issue.

Great detailed process of the fitting , top job {thumbup}

To Patrick@TWM Performance; could you please tell me if you do a kit to suit right hand drive cars, i have a 5 speed X RS, i have linkage bushings done on the selector cables, and was wondering who did what short shift wise, then i found this thread :D looks a quality product, but as the shifter shaft has the dog leg in to throw it towards the driver , i assume they are handed??
Does the spherical part where the spring housing fits rotate , (then held in postion with a keyway or grub screw) or is it fixed to the shaft or is it actually a one piece assembly?
I am keen to try one of these units but if there is no r/hand drive option, i will have to look at something else.
Many thanks, Nick{thumbup}

Hello Nick,

You'll be happy to know that we do offer an EVO X short shifter for RHD applications. The short shifter is fixed and the RHD TWM Shifter is straight as opposed to being offset to the left (for LHD cars) so that your Neutral is located directly in the center of your RHD consol.

If you check out the following link to our site, you'll see that there is an option to select the RHD unit when in the "select your model" drop down menu.

http://www.twmperformance.com/shorts...rtshifters.htm

Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help!

Thanks,

Installed mine, all I have to say is DAMN! I am very happy. The installation instructions that came with the part were more then perfect. Followed them to a "T" and did not have any issues at all. I am happy that third gear now seems a ton less notchy and the shifting is so much quicker. A great add on to seriosly increase driving perfomance and enjoyment.

The notchiness still exists for me (with short throw, both sets of bushings, and new fluid) but it has been drastically reduced. The overall feel is greatly increased with the short throw. Def a good mod even if it doesn't totally remove notchiness.

bouncintiga Jan 4, 2010 09:35 PM

just installed mine with shifter bushings.

notchyness is still there when it's cold but it feels a ton better warmed up (fresh amsoil fluids helps too).

wish the stick was a little taller, more on the level of stock cuz it makes it more comfortable to shift, but the throw is great, definitely reduced a lot.

love this product and would definitely recommend it.

Labrie Jan 5, 2010 04:50 PM

Just wanted to say that I installed mine today and I'm really liking it overall. The install took me all morning to do because I had cars in and out of the shop all day but once I finally had some spare time, the install took me roughly an hour or so. Not really too difficult at all except for the clips you have to dremel off. I would highly recommend this product. A little more harder to shift but the shorter throw makes it more fun to drive!

Thanks for the fast shipping TWM.

I utilized this write up to install the TWM short shifters on my and a friend's evo x with solid base bushings. Great products! The shifter feels more firm sliding into the gates.

The short shifter is not supposed to remove notchiness when cold. To remove the notchiness, go slow and warm the transmission up first.

the stock "upgraded" knob is made out of an aluminum shell and a plastic insert. the insert is glued on and will thermally contract and expand faster than the metal. that's why you get the loose/tight turns depending on the temperature. or if it's even worse and has split apart, i was auto crossing and the metal part came right off the plastic on me. that was fun.

Hi go_dlee,

That would be our kit! We design a dual bend in our shifter to relocate the shifter more towards the driver in a LHD EVO X. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks,

Question - Is TWM going to have any sales on the short shifter? :)

Unfortunately not. We just finished our 4th of July sale that was offering 10% off of everything on our site, so it'll be a while before it comes on sale again.

Thanks,

The WORKS SS does the same thing, this isnt the only one that does it.

TWM reduces shift throw by 30% - $165
WORKS reduces shift thrown by 25% - $160

Not yet but I will be soon, I am doing a tranny review, but this guy has one. I will not be using TWM because they were no help when I asked for it.

Hey all,
I'm trying to install the WORKS short shifter, but am having a lot of trouble removing the locking washers. I don't have a dremel... has anyone found another solution to do this, or is a dremel really the only answer?

picked up a works and its awesome!
went with the whole package with the urethane console & under-hood bushings

I bought this short shifter today, and when I was putting it on I found out that the previous owner had already put the same exact same short shifter into the car.

Too bad I didn't realize this until I had already taken everything apart and had the short shifter out of the car. :crap:

Oh well at least I got to install the metal brushings.

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum thing. But I was reading about the short shifter and someone on the ExoXtuner broke the plastic ball located on the bottom of the shifter. Is there an easy way to take it out without breaking it?

Thanks!

We include a special tool with our Evo X short shifter to remove this cup without breaking it. Another TWM exclusivity!

Cool! Thanks! It was easy popping it out. I think the hard part was getting the pins off. Everything else was so simple. lol....

The effort required to engage gears is slightly more then stock. It's barely even noticeable. The EVO X shifter is one of our best selling products and people always love the feel!

Just install my short shifter and base bushings and pulling back on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears takes alot of effort.
2nd, 4th, and reverse is fine, any reason for this?

nice write up. used this to install the torque solution one. would of been easier if i had a drill bit to cut the washers out. instead i used a flat head screwdriver and hammer. I was sketchy at first about using the synthetic grease , because that is what i had. But everyone said to use the white lithium grease so it doesn't freeze up in the winter. And it was great advice.

Thanks! I am going to do this in the upcoming weeks and should be a breeze now.
