Front/Rear Diamond Emblems Question

I've decided to change the chrome look of the emblems to red and did some research on the forums of how to go about it. I like the vinyl idea but I'm wondering if electrical vinyl tape is what people are talking about or is it some other type of vinyl?

Not a big fan of vinyl, or the carbon tape pieces, I did however remove the rear badge, and scuff the front one up Prime and paint with a nice flat black.

So I decided to paint them rather than vinyl. I only had time to do the rear and I must say it looks good but I did have an issue. When I peeled the masking tape off which was protecting the edges of the emblem, a small piece of paint peeled off the face of the emblem along with the tape. I used Rust-O-Leum spray paint for plastics and put 2 coats a few minutes apart. Should I not use 2 coats and peel the tape before it dries? Am I spraying too much paint perhaps?

To avoid that, just pull the emblem out and paint it. Carefully lift an edge of the diamond with a thin flat bar just enough to get several strings of dental floss behind it. Work the floss back and forth as you pull the emblem away.

Scuff, clean, paint and re-install w/ 2-way tape.

Problem with that is I actually want the sides to remain chrome instead of painting them red. So whether I take them out or not, I need to cover the sides with protective tape.
