Voltex Review Part 2 - The Type 1S GT Wing Explained

As many of you seen before, Voltex has released a more street-friendly GT Wing (though I'm not so sure if it can be referenced to the "GT" terminology, as I'm sure no "GT" cars will be using this over something like their [Voltex] Type-5 and Type-3 wings). This wing was designed to sit lower to the roof line with 225mm bracket stand, supporting its more modest 1480mm wing.

Like all Voltex wings, the settings on both the top and bottom mounts remain very user-friendly. Many wings limit you to 1-3 positions, but not with Voltex. They offer the user several different positions for forward-and-back mounting, wing height mounting, and wing angle mounting. The amount within in each setting-position can be found below;
  • Wing Angle Settings: 5 in total
  • Wing Height Settings: 4 in total
  • Wing Stand Positioning, front to back: 2 in total
The styling of this (somewhat) new version is similar to the old Type-1 and Type-2 version GT wings, where it is a single plain design with a 'berm' in the middle that acts like a center diffuser to reduce drag and deflect air over and under the wing. This is the same design styling found on the factory Evo 10 wing (via GSR SSS and MR). The end plates attached drop down from the base and are incorporated as one fluid mold/design, which is different from any design previously offered. The base mounts remain the same- FRP/Polyurethane composite, designed to fit in replace of the factory wing.

Options- This is something Voltex didn't overlook (this time), and gave you a small amount of things to make your purchase different from the all the other guys. Afterall, regardless of the performance benefits, everyone wants to remain unique. Being that the stands only sit in a 225mm height, you can always add their 30mm wing risers to give it a little boost in stance. They have also designed two different constructions/compositions to the platform, giving you the option of purchasing either a Carbon or an FRP model. There are no real large weight-saving benefits between these two, as this was implemented as a 'personalization' feature. Maybe you have a carbon roof or trunk... Well the Carbon version wing will match it! Maybe you have an all white car, with white wheels and... err... a white roof, and need to match it! Well, the FRP model comes (Voltex standard) perfectly finished in a black, weather-resistant coating that can be easily repainted to match your Rick-Ross theme (all white), as displayed above and below. And there's no need to worry, Voltex gives you their raised print Voltex badges which sit nicely within the divots on both sides of the wing. This way no one can be confused on the actual model of the wing you purchased. Personalization couldn't be more beneficial without the illustrious insignia to go with it.

For all Voltex wings, their stands had always been offered in 2 ways, Straight and V-Mount. This year they outdid themselves and made 3 different options for you to choose from- Straight Mount, V-Mount, and the all new Center Mount design. Both the V and Straight mounts still work with the direct-fit, no drilling required bases. The Center Mount, for reasons clearly seen, will require that you drill 4 3-5mm holes in that beautiful trunk of yours for a straight and sturdy fit. With this new style the user has a more strengthened base/bracket design by mounting the wing closer towards the center, rather than at each end. This will create a stronger and more rigid structure at the center of the wing.

In the recent testing done by our comrades over at Evasive Motorsports, they tested the results between the factory wing and this Type 1S design, and resulted in a 2 SECOND TIME REDUCTION at Buttonwillow Raceway in Southern California. Unfortunately this wing still remains fairly new to the US-side, where actual testing remains minimal, but we assure you, with everything we've seen before over the past 7 years, Voltex never fails to impress. Regardless of your aerodynamic appetite, this wing remains purposeful in every way.

That looks great. Thanks for the explanation. I still think their Type 9 wing is the best for the X, I'll be snagging one soon.

It is similar, yes. I believe these were both released around the same time back in 2009-2010. You can always swap the 225mm stands for a 275mm stand and apply the 30mm riser.

For an additional price you can order 245 or 275mm stands.

We do not. We have pictures on the Evo 8-9 trunk, but not installed on the car itself.

I should also probably state this in a more-visible font:

When a Voltex wing is marked as "Vehicle Specific", that means it works in a perfect replacement of your factory wing. No drilling of new holes is required, and it fits in the exact same space as the factory wing.
