Hub and caliper detail
Hub and caliper detail
Spent about 6 hours today cleaning the rust off the hubs and painting them, along with cleaning the calipers. It's a 2012 GSR I bought new at the end of 2012. Have about 59k miles and an running Advan wheels with no center caps. I figured I would make her look pretty for MOD next week.
The calipers were an after thought. Once I got in there I decided to do them as well. I used the Harbor Freight Dremmel with the wire brush tip to get the rust off the hubs and used the buffing tip with rubbing compound to clean the calipers. I figure they will turn black next year from doing more track days but I think it's cheating to have them black from dirt and grease instead of heat.
I used Rust Oleum Rust Reformer on the hubs. I decided not to paint the nuts since they looked pretty good after taking the dremmel to them. I just did the same thing to them as I did the calipers.
It was actually very easy. Rust came off pretty easily with the dremmel. Just took awhile because I tried to get every ounce of rust off thinking I could get away with just clearing them and not painting them. But even without the rust I didn't like them.
Below are some photos of before bad after and the scene in general.

I'm not a painter so excuse my ugly tape off job.

The hubs rust pretty quickly, but I always had caps. Decided I liked the look of capless.
The calipers and hubs are pretty easy to clean up with a dremel and some buffing and wire brush tips.
Never thought I would get much use out of the Dremel but it's turning out to be handy. Going to install my Aerocatch hood latches next weekend and I think the dremel will work for that as well.

cleaning calipers
get grease and wax remover that works awsome on cleaning the break dust off the calipers and it wont ruin the paint. it just turns it cloudy when it dries. so just buff it with a clean cloth and its shinny like new
