Wheel balance question

Wheel balance question

I recently had Big O tires mount and balance my new RPF1's. After going home I noticed they attached little weights on the inside of my rims. I called and asked to see if I could take them off but the guy couldn't give me a real good answer. So is it safe to take these weights off? I don't have hubcentric rings yet but there is no shaking at high speeds.

LOL, nice sarcasm.

If you take the weights off, your wheel/tire will no longer be balanced and will get vibration at higher speeds usually around 50-70mph.

Also hubcentric rings are used to center the wheel on the hub when the wheel hub bore is larger than your actual wheel hub diameter when you install aftermarket wheels. This has nothing to do with the actual balance of the wheel/tire. If your rim is not mounted centered on the hub, that will lead to a very bad vibration/ and excessive tire wear that the wheel/tire balance cannot help. While your question is if it is safe to remove the weights, Yes it is....but highly not recommended unless you want vibration, premature tire wear, discomfort, shaking steering wheel, etc!

^^exactly what he said.

the weights are to ensure the wheel is balanced, taking them off will throw off the balance. you could probably have the shop install the weights at a location that doesn't bother you if you are concerned about looks. Regardless, even people with volks etc leave the weights on as they are. You NEED them.

Get the hub centric rings ASAP, don't run the wheels too long without them.
