Broken Rotor

I guess I waited one event too long before replacing my stock brake rotors. Last weekend at the track broke the front rotor on my first set of laps where the hat completely separated. Could have been much worse - fortunately didn't damage anything else and was able to come to a stop with no issues. Also was able to get replacements from TireRack shipped overnight with Sat delivery (thanks for the great service) since nobody local stocked Evo rotors - including the Mitsu dealers within a 3 hr driving radius. Otherwise I would have been looking for a truck/trailer to get home.

Had 21K miles on the car with stock brake setup except for pads, but have had 6 or 7 track weekends included in that. I had just inspected the rotors before going out and did not see any sign of cracks or anything suspicious. I think I will add rotors to my list of yearly maintenance items from this point forward...

I live in Monkton and was in Morristown, NY at St. Lawrence Motorsports Park. And yes it was cold, windy, and raining most of the weekend...even snowed and hailed a little bit. Gotta love April in the northeast. Nice to have AWD...

I've seen a WW X in Williston a couple of times - yours by any chance?

Sent you a PM to keep it on topic

I have had rotors crack on GTis but only after years of heat cycles. I wonder if there was a defect

Did u ever measure thickness to make sure they were within safe operating spec when u inspect them or just visually? Glad it wasnt serious!

Its not the actual outer rotor that failed. Its the center hat that came apart from the rotor assembly which is pretty thin to begin with unless you have the Mr 2-piece front rotors. This is a high safety concern especially if tracking the car.

As stated, it was definitely the hat that separated. The rotor surfaces were well within spec. As MR Dan said, given the way they are designed that appears to be the weak point. I bought Centric replacements this time since I needed them in a hurry, but I am looking to get two piece rotors before too long.

Here's a couple of other pictures that I took. I have them in the garage if you are looking for a different view or something specific. They got pretty wet with the rain, so quite a bit of surface rust.

Yah this has happened to others as well. I completely forgot about it until you posted your thread. I wonder if this is specific to 08's.

If you want the BEST stock replacement then I would go with girodisc, hands down. Just search and you will find all the information. They aren't cheap tho..
