Tires

Hey guys, it's getting close to that cold time of the year, and I was wondering if anybody could give me an idea how the stock yoko's hold up in the snow. I really didn't want to go out and buy winter tires, since I'm trying to save up for RPF1's and new tires for the spring. Also any imput on a good sticky tire is welcome also. Thanks

You should be fine in Chicago. The tires aren't the best for snow... but if you don't drive like an idiot and respect the car and the conditions you shouldn't have a problem. Don't forget you can put the car into Snow Mode as well which will help smooth out acceleration.

Edit: If you choose to get winter tires though, Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-03 is the way to go.

Those ires have a transition point in the 40Fs. They are dangerous in cold weather. Compound lets go with no warning and no control.

Get all-seasons or snow tires.

What do you guys think would be better. My car is at stock height right now. I do plan on buying the swift springs and lowering it a little bit. 255 or 265?

For the RPF1s you're going to buy? If 18x9.5+15, get a 265 tire.

ive never had the "stock" advans personally but have had other summer tires in the snow on my evo.. the awd will make it go just fine but there is nothing you can do to turn or stop it once it goes and that is about as dangerous as it gets. find snow tires or leave it parked is my advice

I got my car in December, and three days later, the rear end kicked out. A few days after that, I bought Blizzaks. The stock Yokos don't do well in cold weather...

We had a pretty mild winter in MD last year. From what I remember, the tires got pretty hard and I hit a patch of snow in a parking lot and my rear came out..... So I'm definitely buying winter tires for this year!

Should not drive the oem Yokos in temps consistently below 40 deg. The compound will turn hard like a marble. The tire will have no grip on the road surface and you run the risk of damaging the tire. When warm weather summer compounds get hard due to cold temps they become brittle and can chunk/chip. Best to use a set of all seasons or a set of snows for the winter months.

We had a mild winter last year, but the year before that remember what LSD looked like? A frozen parking lot of abandon cars.
