Lots of rust on wheel hub?
Picture says it all:

The rust is so thick it pried off the hub ring that was supposed to be greased on the wheel, not the hub. It also took the strength of the lug nuts to center and mount the wheel afterwards. Anyone else seen this before? Is this common?

some rust is common, but that looks like an excessive amount. Over the years with multiple cars, I've always seen a small amount of rust.
Maybe sand off the rust and spray on some Rustoleum or engine enamel. My rear Gyrodisc rotors rusted pretty bad so i used some black ceramic engine enamel to stop it and it worked great.

Mitsu hubs rust. They always have. I use the green side of a Scotch-Brite pad whenever I'm in there. I don't ever do more than this because, if you actually create an asymmetric lip on the hub, then it must be discarded.
ps. (to bdonIX) Many rotors also rust, too, but who cares? ... it will be replaced soon enough.

I just mean the exterior surface where the pads do not make contact. On rears, there is a lot of visible area and a bright orange rust ring didnt sit well with my black wheels and powdered teal brembos lol
Ah. Yeah, that can be annoying. For example, while it's easy for me to source rear rotors (for my funky brakes) with the area between the center and the rotor surface coated in rust-resistant black, no such rotors exist for my fronts, unless I get something silly like slotted Rotoras. I was tempted to paint the fronts, myself, but the side of me that hates anything cosmetic won the battle against the side of me that love cosmetic mods.

just FYI - a long time ago i got a set of rotors (forgot what brand) that was entirely gold zinc coated. while the surface making contact with the pad had its coating worn off, the rest didn't rust at all, even the dimples on the brakes.
as for me i think i'll order a set of non-anodized center hats...and maybe get some rust neutralizing agent along the way. rust-o-leum has this spray that turns rust into primer on contact. not sure how it actually works chemically but it worked wonders for me before.

The stuff that you're thinking of is now called "Rust Reformer" http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=40 Funny story: it used to be called "Extendz," but then an impotence pill came along with the name "Extenze" and RustOleum decided to change the name of their product because it's not like guys will go around asking for Viagra or Cialis in public.
