How crucial are mud flaps?

I've read a few places that mud flaps should be one of the first things I get for my Evo, but all those posts are old and very very few and far between. I have a ton up upgrades/fixing to do and only a limited budget (new fuel injectors, SST cooling, etc), so I'm just wondering hoqw high on the priority list a $130 set of mud flaps should be.

Little late to post this but,
From my understanding the 2008 Evo side skirts (non aero kit) are different from the 2010-2015 non aero skirts. The slimmer skirts would allow more rocks to flick up from the front wheels and chip the lower part of the rear door, alas many people got mud flaps to minimize this. Its not as important on 2010+ Evos with the wider side skirt, but to each their own.
I run a set of OEM ones on my 2013 because I like the look and because I got 2 sets of them for a helluava steal.

I have them and believe that they do help keep rock chips off of the sides. My hood and front fenders have several chips from 25k miles, but the sides are still pristine. I don't think they look bad at all, of course my flaps are black on a black car, so they don't stand out much.

That is correct
2008 non-aero skirts are different than the rest, thinner and they do allow a lot more stone chips.
