Performance Header? what does it do?

When i was pricing exhaust systems someone mentioned something about peformance headers. What is the purpose of a header? And even more important what would a pefromance header do for my car?

Holy n00b question Batman!

It's a breathing mod like any other. Plus the "benefit" (depends on if in Cali or not) of removing that obnoxious first cat. Bigger exhaust runners and wider collector help get exhaust gasses out faster.

(Doesn't live in Cali) Found an exhaust shop that will pull my CAT, so a header can be pulled to? Or just upgraded?

The stock exhaust manifold assembly is a weird combination of exhaust runners and the first cat. Any aftermarket one will be the runners emptying to a collector. The entire stock assembly will be pulled out.
