Evo breakin

I was wondering how long it takes to break in engine to where you can use the full powerband safely? My dealer said 500 is fine. Also how long to wait to modify?? I have about 600 now.

You should wait about 1000 miles. But this also depends on the trans. My trans started to shift smoother at 1300. Every car is different.

I waited until 1000, then changed the oil again and gradually ramped up the power. Like I didn't go out and redline the thing right after that oil change, but like went up to 6500 or so on like half throttle. Takes some serious self control though, after that I was like screw it. My trans didn't shift smoother 'til like after 5000 miles, and now with 20k on it still likes to get notchy every now and then, but I remember 5k being a little milestone.

Hey

I also now own a silver MR after trading in an '03 evo.

For break-in, the owners manual says to take it easy (under 4000 rpms) for the first 600 miles. However, this seems a bit on the short side for me, so to about 4-600 miles, I kept it under 3000 rpms or so, then started ramping it up. at 1000 miles i started really pushing her more, changed the oil to clear up the shavings, then opened her all the way up.

p.s. there are SO many threads on this topic. search!
