what is shaft play?

the only thing I know is that it affects the turbo. Can someone please elaborate.

from my understanding, it is when the bearings holding the turbo's shaft wear and it then allows for the shaft to wobble, or move in and out some. if the internals of the turbo are not perfectly in balance, this could then compound the situation, causing further wobble. Theoretically, if it got bad enough, it could damage/destroy the turbo.

Its bearing wear in the turbo.. shaft play can allow the compressor or impeller wheel to make contact with the inside of the turbo scroll which can wear or damage things.. or worse, suddenly destroy things.. Also, it is an indicator of wear on the bearings and seals which can eventually start leaking oil or worse..

Any turbo that shows any sort of shaft play should be avoided unless you plan on having it rebuilt.. Usually a rebuild (if its not damaged because of the play letting it make contact anywhere) means new bearings, shaft, seals, and a rebalance.. Sometimes a rebuild costs more money than the cost of a new turbo..
