1) Call the dealer and make sure the car is still under warantee
2) Standard PPI -- Compression etc. -- if you are serious
3) Check the calipers -- if they are still red and not brown/red then it hasn't been tracked (road course)
4) Check for records
5) Watch out for bad noises from the Transfer Case -- whining

Go with your gut. If you feel that the car may have been abused... don't buy it!

You can also do a search. There have been many threads on this.

Good luck

Almost bought a black 2003 EVO 8 two days ago 34,000 miles, and had been modded before, problem was, Tested compression (at sea level) and was 138 across all four, seemed a little low, and dealer price was 23,000, and the car had had several clutch issues, spoke with prev owner said he had gauges, downpipe and exsaust, but with all that how bout a boost controller, went with gut, and said no, now looking at another, with 14,000

One more thought -- be patient.
There are many of these cars out there. Take your time and you will find the right one.

Sounds like you already figured that part out though.

One of the more important things: Look for a boost controller a bronze colored knob or a little shiny thing that looks awkwardly placed. I would personally not buy an evo whos been over boosted.

I bought a used evo... I don't regret it... I would just like to slap whoever had it first

put in boost gauge and it read 12psi... all the vaccum lines around the turbo werent stock and sum were zip tied on... fixed that, added boost controller 18 constant psi... runs great now but the clutch died about 4 months after i bought it...25K miles disc was trash and i know how many ppl have had clutch problems so im now waiting for a clutch. JUST BE CAREFUL and have sum money cuz its like ne used car as soon as u buy it sumthin will go wrong and u know how mitsu is about fixing stuff
