Ultimate Newbie questions, need answers

Okay, i just have a few questions. My senior year is coming up and my dad desperately wants to buy me a new car so i can "floss" (yeah, he used that word) and whatever. However, my eyes have been shifting from car to car for a while...and I completely relate to some of the people you guys describe on the "whats the funniest thing anyone has said..." threads lol...like for a while i thought all lancers were the same, and Evo just meant it was a different year (i.e. i thought they all were ~150hp and slow)...a while as in..until this weekend heh. So anyway, with my eye currently on Evo's i have a couple questions that are so trivial i think anyone on these forums could answer:

1 What is ACD and Mivec(?) coming on the new evo IX?

2 What is the difference between the normal evo 8's, WW model, and RS model? (i read about the MR)

3 What are the differences as far as year goes? (i.e. 2003, 4, 5)

4 Will the value of these cars drop dramatically after the IX's are released?

5 As far as modifications, how do Stages work? and what are the basic stages of evo mods?(i'm guessing stages are like 1: intake and exhaust for example...2 suspension and breaks....etcetc...basically stages of mods right?)

6 Ok, before Evos i was checking out the STis, almost bought one actually. They have 50 more HP stock than an evo. How the heck are evo's times faster? can someone explain?

7 How is the insurance on these cars? for a ...teenager lol, male

8 Would it be impractical to NOT have another car for Daily driving? (i.e., could i drive the lancer to school and back everyday?)

9 Have any of you LOST to an STi? theres one at my schoo already, i want to take him down

10 Anything else you guys wanna let me know about the car? thingsto watch out for when buying one?(i'll be getting it from a private party, can't afford a dealership purchase right now)

Thank all of you forthe help, and please, please...Only you can prevent forest fires (dont flame me!!)

^^^^^^ the search button is the shizzle, my nizzle...j/k....the search function works really good, but be as specific as possible and, well, you'll find out why.

1 What is ACD and Mivec(?) coming on the new evo IX? search, the answer is all over the forums.

2 What is the difference between the normal evo 8's, WW model, and RS model? (i read about the MR) WW is referring to a color. The RS model is basically a stripped down version. No power locks or windows. No a/c. No radio... that kind of thing. No CF wing....

3 What are the differences as far as year goes? (i.e. 2003, 4, 5) A new color in '05. Other than that, not much that I know of. Instead of standard HID's, in the '05 and possibly the '04s it was part of an option.

4 Will the value of these cars drop dramatically after the IX's are released? I doubt much more than they already have.

5 As far as modifications, how do Stages work? and what are the basic stages of evo mods?(i'm guessing stages are like 1: intake and exhaust for example...2 suspension and breaks....etcetc...basically stages of mods right?) if I'm not mistaken, it is referring strictly to turbo mods and what has been done with the turbo.

6 Ok, before Evos i was checking out the STis, almost bought one actually. They have 50 more HP stock than an evo. How the heck are evo's times faster? can someone explain? I don't drive either/

7 How is the insurance on these cars? for a ...teenager lol, male) Prison rape

8 Would it be impractical to NOT have another car for Daily driving? (i.e., could i drive the lancer to school and back everyday?) Yes, this would be acceptable (depending on who you ask). As far as I'm concerned, why not.

9 Have any of you LOST to an STi? theres one at my schoo already, i want to take him down Nope but make sure you keep it at the track!!!

10 Anything else you guys wanna let me know about the car? thingsto watch out for when buying one?(i'll be getting it from a private party, can't afford a dealership purchase right now) Good luck?!? Read the forums, you can learn a lot.

Man, the kid just asked some questions, he didn't ask you to be an *** because you don't think he's old enough to own the car. Regardless of what you think is an appropriate age, he may not fit into the genre of kids that seem to wreck the car in a week.

Besides, if my parents would buy me a car, do you think I would be asking for a freaking honda?!? HELL NO!!!

EVO and STi times always bias one way or the other from magazine to magazine, but the times are almost always within 2-3 tenths. Cars basically do the same thing, but with a different approach to it. Insurance is gonna suck, get over it.

1. MIVEC = Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system

2. Evo RS is a stripped version of the Evo VIII. no radio, and no power windows (i think). There is no WW model, WW = Wicked White, a color choice

3. 2003 HID headlights standard, 2004 HID optional, SSL package option, 2005 HID SSL optional (cant remember all the differences)

4. I highly doubt it

5. No idea what you mean

6. No idea

7. A teenager...very high..i was quoted $4000 a year under my dad's name

8. No, it would be fun to have a daily Evo

9. Haven't raced one

10. Deffinetly take it for an inspection at a shop. Make sure the clutch isn't worn, check the tire wear, paint chips, dings etc.

Glad to help

1 ACD is the center differential that transfers torque to the front and rear wheels based on a computer and not mechanically like a standard center differential. Mivec is mitsubishi's version of vtec. It electronically controlls the valve timing.

2 WW = weightless white; its a color. The MR edition is 6 speed with upgraded suspension over the other models and a few more goodies. RS is the barebones; comes with no spoiler, un-painted door handles, no radio etc.

3 03's and 04's have a mechanical diff while 05's have the ACD. 05's also have a larger hotside on the turbo 03's are 9.8, 05's are 10.5 i believe.

4 Can't predict future

5 Stages are just ways to talk about how heavily modified you car are. Visit www.buschurracing.com or www.automotosports.com to get an idea of 'stages'.

6 STi's only have 30 more crank hp and torque than the evolution. It really comes down to driver to determine which is faster stock. Evo could be faster due to less drivetrain loss or gear ratio's more suited for a quarter mile.

7 Expensive, very expensive. If you are getting a loan from the bank you will need full coverage which will be expensive. Did I mention expensive? (think three grand atleast a year)

8 The car is a fine daily driver as long as its stock. I wouldn't risk modding it if it was my only car available to me.

9 Please don't buy an evo if you are going to be drag racing sti's. Buy an srt-4; it will be cheaper and just as fast in the long run.

10 Don't buy one that has been modded and bring a friend that knows what to look for.

it dont matter if hes not in that "group"
the Evo is a finely crafted vehicle(ok all jokes aside lol) and requires precision and skill from the driver
ok I would say maybe to him getting an Evo but he wants to mod it already....a 16 or 17yr old cant handle a 300whp+ car...we all think we can at that age but in reality you know the truth and that car will get him into trouble real fast
ok he might not be in that group but what about when he encounters a situation that he hasnt encountered before? maybe his 1st accident(if he didnt have one already) or she he spins it or some other situation
my point is at his age hes not experienced enough to know what to do and how to control the car in the event of something happening.....

fast forward a couple months...hes gotten used to the car, starts pushing it more and more
loses the rear end in a corner....it can happen to teh best of us....is he gonna know what to do?

my last car was a prelude and it was FAR from stock
I took that thing to the track(drag strip and road course) a couple of times and I learned so much from it
and I didnt care if it got beat up or not
I also learned alot from just driving it on the street
you dont want to learn that stuff on an Evo especially when youre young and dont have much $$$ to play with

my point is especially for someone as young as himself to learn the basics on a car thats a couple step under the Evo
then when youre ready get the Evo

I didnt mean to come across as an *** but he should learn on something else

Agreed

ok I would say maybe to him getting an Evo but he wants to mod it already...
I just saw him ask what it meant by different stages. To me this doesn't mean he is already buying mods, but rather that he is trying to learn about the car.

a 16 or 17yr old cant handle a 300whp+ car...we all think we can at that age but in reality you know the truth and that car will get him into trouble real fast
what age is appropriate then??? Just because he is young doesn't mean he is not a good/safe driver.

ok he might not be in that group but what about when he encounters a situation that he hasnt encountered before? maybe his 1st accident(if he didnt have one already) or she he spins it or some other situation
Then he learns like the rest of us. I'm 23 and have never had an accident or a ticket. I'm constantly faced with situations on the road that I've never dealt with before. Just because I haven't faced every scenario doesn't mean I am not a safe driver. Nor does it mean that I shouldn't be driving a nice car.

my point is at his age hes not experienced enough to know what to do and how to control the car in the event of something happening.....
Agreed to an extent. Looking at his info, it appears he is not new to driving though.

fast forward a couple months...hes gotten used to the car, starts pushing it more and more
loses the rear end in a corner....it can happen to teh best of us....is he gonna know what to do?
In your own words, "it can happen to the best of us," Unfortunately, that's how you learn in life. I've never had the backend on my car swing out until the yesterday. Scared the **** out of me. But, I figured it out and pulled it out fine.

my last car was a prelude and it was FAR from stock

1) what's the difference in what he drives 2) his dad is buying the car... not his $$$

I disagree slightly, but that's just my own opinion.

I didnt mean to come across as an *** but he should learn on something else
1) Sorry if I misunderstood you 2) Already stated, but it doesn't sound like this is his first car.

Sorry for the hijack.

thanks need Z....yeah i had no intention of modding it right away, well not the engine atleast...at MOST id mess with the suspension a little, but my parents arent RICH, nor am I, it would be a while after i've driven the car that i'd add anythnig to it...i know my parents would pay for the car, not what i would want to do after it

which isnt much
