I'll try to give the scientific reason for the rear wiper.
When a car moves through the air it naturally separates the air in front as the car pierce through it. Air then goes around and over the top of the car and separates at the trailing edge at the rear edge of the roof. This creates a vacuum immediately behind the car. You can not have a vecuum in the atmosphere, which means the air that just went past the car now double back to fill in the vacuum and in doing so rush to kiss the back of the car. On a dirty road this means, within minutes all that dust particals that was kicked up by the car will now be depositing on the back of the car. Hence the wiper. The wiper is a must when you are on a dirty road. This problem is more accute in a van or a bus where the back window forms a part of the rear wall and the sirling votex of air can more easily reach the rear window. It has been a while since I was at college, this is as best as I could remember guys.

Don't know if this was said before and I don't want to read 40+ responses, but the rear wiper is there if you are rallying or having fun in the desert. You know because if you're racing it isn't very good to pull off to the side and wash your car.
