First off great attitude! Most of the "should I by an Evo" threads I see, I end up wishing they don't buy one. If your not bored with the gsx, keep it/ make it even faster, like you said, once you have admitted that cars are a hobby and a pleasurable waste of time and money altogether, the new/value/reliable/staus part of the equation is irrelevant. It only matters what you want and most of us here can vouch that the evo is worthy. I will drive/build my 03' until they stop making parts.

It depends on what kind of racing you do. If you are only into drag racing stick with the eclipse.

If you want to upgrade then don't go get the flagship but instead purchase a used 03 and mod it. No sense in wasting a warranty or a MR version on drag racing.

I came from a 98 GSX and went to an 03 EVO. I seriously think I could have made my GSX just as good or better than the evo for way less cash. However most of that money would be lost. The EVO is great right out of the box and tends to hold its value better than a modded GSX.

Dude, I was in your shoes once.. I had a daily driven 11 sec 93 GSX. Also had 2 VERY fast 95 GST's.. Got rid of them and got my EVO's... No way near the same car... The potential is endless when it comes to the EVO... I do not regret my decision at all... There are a couple times that I was like, Wow I miss my GSX.. But then I hammer the EVO, and it all goes away... Have you ever done the nasty in the backseat of the GSX? Didn't think so!!

I have a '90 GSX as well. I still love the car. In fact, I much prefer it as a daily driver. Which is good because my EVO will be sitting in storage until I can afford to properly rebuild the transmission -- too much fun at the motorplex. Anyhow, I say enjoy the GSX for now and put the $10K into savings. You'll need it when you get an EVO.

Keep the GSX, mod away, fix it up properly and save some of the money .... no need to buy a new EVO if you are going to mod it and beat on it, you'll just be wasting money that goes towards a warranty that will never be used .... why incure the extra expense ...

Thanks for the input guys!

First let me say that the $10k I have was saved specifically with car usage in mind. Keeping in mind that you can never have too many investments, I already have quite a few, 401K Stocks, Bonds, Roth IRA, and about 7 real estate properties. The cash was saved soley for the use on a car. So please try to keep that in mind.

To tell you the truth, I REALLY want the EVO MR...... but I am trying to also consider it may not be the best option for what I am looking for. Which is a SICK *** car that I can drive daily.

BTW, I do have a nice DD, its a 2003 Honda Civic. Stock. Thats what I use when the DSM currently is broken, which is about once a week. So I am not worried about stuff not working right. Also I could care less about the warranty on the EVO, ive never had one before and I always end up doing all my own work anyway. Even thought I DEFINETLY can see the benefits of it being free, its just not worth it not the mod to me.

Thx a lot and please keep it coming!

Umm.... Ok let me see... You have a Civic to get around and a bad *** DSM
I know I would want an Evo but I mean hell if I had 10k to blow on something.

Time to buy a BIKE!! The new ZX-10R is more than enough to get your kicks when you can "Run first gear up to redline and it's good for 105 m.p.h or so"

I agree most with a previous statement that if you put 10 grand into that dsm you will be running some very fast times especially drag. Me personally i would go with the Evo. and if you say that you really want it, then go with the evo. especially if you say you have money squared away for other things and the 10 grand is specifically for a car. My .02 is go with the Evo.

I'd say really think about what mods you want to do before you go and buy an MR. if your going to put in coilovers or change the rims, its not worth it, just save alot of money and buy the RS and mod the hell out of that and if your a drag strip kinda guy the 5speed ratios are better than the 6--

I currently have $10k laying around for me to drop into my car and I am trying to decide if it would be best for me to put that $10k into my already modded 1990 Exlipse GSX (see bottom for list of mods) or put the $10k as a down payment on a 2006 Evo MR. Also let me say first and foremost that I have no problems at all with my GSX except of course for the fact its a DSM so it breaks once a week. So its not like im replacing a problem.

The main thing is that it is going to be one car or the other. The reason is because if I buy the EVO I am of course going to Mod the hell out of it, and I cant afford to seriously mod 2 cars. So if I buy the EVO the GSX is sold or of course I just keep the GSX, screw the EVO, and drop $10k into it.

I would really like to know what you guys think would be best. Let me give a quick synopsis of my thought pattern. I dont care about the 06 being new and my DSM being old. Hell everything on the DSM is new or would be new anyway (engine, tranny, etc.) However the EVO MR is a DAMN base model car, its not made for luxury or convenience only performance. And of course since I plan to MOD the hell out of either car, im most interested in performance. I do however need to be able to drive the vehicle on a day to day basis. Of course I have a DD, but I want to be able to drive my MOD car anytime I want as well. I am the type to like to get the most performance wise out of my car. I mod them as much as I can as hard as I can as long as I can still drive them regularly. I dont care about how one may look cooler then the other. I realize that of course the EVO MR is a far superior vehicle stock, but how about putting an extra $10k into my already modded GSX (see bottom for mods) with that in mind is it that much of a difference even if I were to of course mod my EVO MR as well? I dont care about a car payment. I can afford it easily. One of the main things that just popped into my head is emissions. I live in GA where there are of course emissions. My GSX is ODB I and passes easily even heavily modded, my EVO MR would be ODB II. Would emissions then become a problem for me? Of course I have no problem paying a "tip" to the inspector to "help" my EVO MR pass. Oh and I plan to keep either car I decide to go with until the end of time.

Oh well, guys what do you think? $10k down payment on an 06 EVO MR or $10k into my already modded GSX? Also please actually view the mods below that I already have as they are important factors. Thanks a lot guys. Also please put your reasons for voting the way you do.

List of Mods in 90 Eclipse GSX:

Bolt-On Mods
SAFC, MMCD Datalogger on a Palm VX, 3" Buschur Exhaust with Apex N1 can and 2.5" downpipe

Engine Internals
Buschur stage 3 shortblock, Buscher Stage 3 Head, JE pistons, Eagle rods and ARP fasteners throughout including head studs, Prothane motor mounts

Suspension Mods
Suspension Techniques 1.3" lowering springs, Koni yellow adjustable struts, GAB Sport 8-way adjustable rear shocks. Greddy strut tower bar, Buschur rear strut bar

I have been there I have done that...

Hi,

I am Carlos, I am currently driving a 05 MR but I have had 3 Eclipses(90 GSX, 91GSX and a 90 Laser RS). I also had a WRX heavily modded a 91 Stealth R/T Twin Turbo modded and the list goes on and on.

How old are you if you don't mind asking?, married?, kids? student? renting home owning home? decent job?

You don't really need to answer this questions to me, just ask your self the same questions. If money is not an obstacle go for the 06 MR , the car is the bomb great handling, great performance 4door for family, etc, etc.

I am sorry if I was being very personal but to me and to most of us your income, your age, you marital status, having kids, renting or owning or living with parents would make the biggest difference when choosing between a brand new 06MR or $10k on a Eclipse.

I was forced to buy a WRX(4 doors) 3 years ago because my ex-wife did not want a two door two seat car. I came to USA and wanted a Nissan 350Z Enthusiast, I was going to be THE FIRST GUY IN TUCSON driving the 1st 350Z, my mistake was taking my wife to the dealer, she said NO(keep in mind she is a high ranking woman in the Military). When I was 27 single I had a Porsche 911 (964)Carrera4 Cabriolet when I was overseas Stationed in RAF Lakenheath, I was cocky, I thoought I was invencible, you see what I mean ?, take your time and analize your budget and needs, sometimes family comes first!

If you live with your parents you might want to save up and go GSX way then get the MR later..

The GSX is a killer, I had 3 1g DSM turbos, they are the ****, you can make it a 10 sec car with the $10k and you could have more spending cash. On the 06 MR it will take a hit on your pocket($632 a month for me with a 3.6969 % interest rate and $3000 down) plus insurance.

Both cars are lovely, good luck in your decisions, NEVER live out of your means, if you can't afford a 06MR now then wait because once you sign the contract for purchasing there is no way back.
Once you make a late payment it would hurt your credit bad. I hope my experience helped you.
