Known problems with the Evo?

Hey guys, I currently own a 2003 350z.

I love it and it's a great car but things are changing in my life and a sedan would be more sensible. Unfortunately I'm still very much hooked on performance and style. The Evo is currently one of the cars on the top of my list right now. The thing is I used to own a 95 Talon Tsi AWD. Great car, unfortunately, I was constantly under the hood of that car. I was spending more time fixing it than driving it. Now I understand the Evo is a different car, and that every car has it's share of problems be it large or small, but are there any problems I should expect from the Evo? Also, I'm trying to ween myself off of spending money on mods, will I be decently happy with the Evo in stock form? Thanks guys.

No major issues with my Evo, I did replace the stock clutch at 20k. The Evo is definitely faster that the 350z even if the 350 has some basic mods. ex intake and exhaust.

Tha Evo handles much better as well, you will be very pleased if you switch.

I hear ya. But I've been modding different cars for a while now, in both Show and Go departments. I think I've slowly come to that point where I want a car that's good to go in stock form. Of course, I'll mod it here and there but definately not to the extremes I modded my other vehicles.

In stock form, you're going to be HARD PRESSED to find a car that takes corners and drives as fast as an EVO. . .I've been in the same boat as you, and opted for the EVO just because it's blazingly awesome off the show-room floor. . .I don't really plan to modify mine much at all, so if you want a plug, yeah, defintley a nod to the EVO. . .and the tuning that is doable, can be done for a fraction of the cost compared to other Euro cars out there (S4, M3, etc.) and JDM cars (Sti, WRX, etc.).
Go for it, and get a cheap 2005 before they're all GONE. . .

Funny how I had the same mentality as you when I first bought my 05 Evo. I said to myself the car is fast enough and I dont' need to mod it anymore because there are few cars out there that can take the Evo even in stock form. The problem is once you have an Evo you'll understand how hard it is not to "mod" it. Just exterior alone will cost you several grand EASY. Then comes the never ending power mods, which I won't even elaborate on. But hey, if you feel you're strong minded enough not to mod the car it is still the best true-performance 4 door car out there for the money. And lots of trunk space too, which you can't get with any 2 door.

Yea and don't let anybody tell you the drivetrain sux(tranny, TC, diffs) b/c all the people that have had problems usually have no idea how to drive an AWD car! I love the EVo

Problems from the EVO:

1. Few rattles and squeeks when driving but what do you expect, its a performance car.
2. Stock tires wear out fast depending on how aggressively you drive.
3. Stock clutch won't last long if you like to launch a lot.
4. Ride is a little bumpy.
5. Parts are expensive.

Ok, I know I'm being nit-picky but apart from that the car is built like a TANK!!! and its very practical for a sports car ...

No man, that's just the kind of info I want. Thanks for the input so far guys.

And rodrigorules, thanks for the compliment. I like to think I modded it up nicely.

not compared to the VW I just switched from.. A header-back exhaust would cost me OVER $2000, and turbo kits were in the $7000 - $25,000 range, with only one SC kit available, making just about 300 whp at the meek price tag of $6000

No matter what you say now, chances are you'll want to mod any car you get (if you've done so in the past) The way I look at it, just excercise a little self control. I also am in a similar boat as you- I'm done with heavy modding- my reason being, after a while, you realize that the money isn't coming back once you drop it on 'mods you don't need' which is pretty subjective
