Smile New Owner of New 05 VIII

Hey guys (gals?),

I just wanted to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. First of all, I purchased a Silver 2005 Evo VIII this Saturday and although I have tried to keep the RPMs below 5k, I still can't keep the smile off my face!
I was advised to break it in for the first 1200 miles and I'm halfway there already.

Well, I live in Corpus Christi and I am an Engineer in the oilfield service business. I'm 24 and just graduated in May '04. I'm originally from the Beaumont, TX area (90 mi east of Houston).

The bottom line is I'm here to learn more about my new car, how it can be efficiently and successfully modified, and hopefully meet some other owners in the area. I promise to faithfully use the search function and try to explain myself fully and clearly when I have questions.

Thanks!
Adam

Good, then go search about the break-in procedure. Who told you 1200 miles? Didn't the dealership show you the required video that tells you exactly how long and in which manner to break-in the car? Mitsu itself only recommends 600 miles without going over 5k rpm or sustained driving at the same mph. If you're already halfway to 1200, then your break-in is OVER. Go hit 7500 in gears 1-3 and really feel the rush...

Congratulations on your car and welcome!!! The permagrin will last for quite awhile, and is brought back to full grin with every mod.

Wow, thats a quick response! Thank you for the tip about the break-in time. No, I didn't see a 'required' video - I actually did the whole deal in less than 2 hours at the dealership including the test drive. It sounds like this is pretty common from reading a few of your other posts. I was going off of what the dealer said and what I saw in the manual. I promise I would have searched first if I had an actual question. By the way, I'm getting about 24 mpg through the first 500 miles.

Fortunately, it seems I haven't been doing so bad. I drove all around downtown houston in heavy traffic the afternoon that I got the car - so plenty of work through the gears. I have pushed it to 5000 several times - but I'm glad to hear I can really work it out now! I read through the website about breaking in the bike engines. Do YOU suggest an oil change very early in the car's life? All the manual says is every 5k under normal conditions.

Edit: Thanks for the warm welcome! I didn't hit post before I went to lunch and - wow! I am very grateful and look forward to hopefully being a productive member here.

I didn't change my oil until 4500 miles or so. Some people like to change it at 1000 miles to get that initial engine wear out of there, but it's not necessary. My car seems to run fine...I'm one of the fastest in the 1/4-mile on the stock turbo and stock cams, so there have been no ill effects in the first 12k.

Thanks again for the feedback. I'm very impressed with the number of vendors on this site and all of the information. I have plenty of research to do on what to do first!

Feel free to PM or IM me with questions. I get questions pretty much everyday, and I try to answer them quickly.
