Current 350Z owner...
Hey...(I have also posted this at ***************)
I am the current owner of an 04 350Z....insert flame here.....
Anyway I will be buying a new car in the next 12 months. Right now I'm leaning towards an Evo (9?) or an Sti. I am here to just see what kind of problems the Evo has and what Evo is best to buy. Any info right off the bat would be great.
To be honest the biggest complaint I have w/ the Evo is it's 4 door sleeper look. I know that can be good too, but I really go for more exotic looking cars. I live in Colorado, so my car is not drivable a fair amount of the time. The Evo w/ great performance AND AWD is very appealing...
Anyway, here's to some good times ahead.

problems usually are the clutch, which you can upgrade, the TC on some have issues, but again you can upgrd via TRE they do awesome work, the tranny can also be done just in case, but overall the car is great
Being the biggest Evo fanatic, you'll hear nothing but truth from me.
Get the Evo for it's the purest sports saloon you can buy. You'll spend alot to maintain it. It might have a few creaks and have a harsh ride but it's uncompromised.
Or,
Get the STI. I think it's actually better in the snow and gravel. It's fit and finish is better and it has a nice interior.

Most fun you can have with your clothes on!
The Evo rides worse and rattles more. But it has a real back seat and a truck. The Wing kind of gives away the sleeper look. But it lives for on ramps and corners and with a moderate investment in parts can put a ton of horsepower to the ground with all four wheels.
You just have to drive it to believe how fun it is. I drove an 05 Magnum, Mustang, Infiniti, GTO and the Mitsu back to back. Bought the Mitsu that same day. Only criteria was "Fun to Drive" Who wants to spend half there life driving if it's not fun?

I just did what you want to do. I have had an 03 DB 350Z touring. I just got a Evo IX, graphite grey.
I still have both cars although I'm going to sell the Z asap. So I'll try to give a side by side.
The Z is a car that makes you feel like you're going 80 when you're doing 50. The evo goes 80 and makes you feel like you're going 50. The reason for this is that driving the Z, you sit lower and are wrapped by the car. The window line is practically at shoulder level.
The Evo, by contrast, you feel like you're in a high riding bubble. You can see everything. NO BLIND spots. Driving the Z fast on the freeway always scared me because the blind spots are so large.
Fit and finish on the Z is much higher than the Evo. I shut the door on my evo the other day and the panel that holds the interior dimming dial fell open.
The evo interior is simple. It accomplishes everything the Z's interior does but its simple. I prefer that.
Having four doors and trunk is really useful.
The most important factor to me is of course performance. The Evo motor is a 2.0L turbocharged motor. The Z is a 3.5 liter NA motor. Driving the two cars could not be more different because of these two facts. The Evo motor is useless below 2k rpm. The Z is all torque through the entire power band.
However the Evo above 4k rpm is an amazing rush. You hear the turbo winding up, you feel yourself being pushed deeper into the seat. The evo just wants to go go go.
Steering. The Z steering feel is muted relative to the Evo. You don't feel the street as much. The evo corners like its on rails, going exactly where you want and where you expect. The feedback from the evo car is amazing. I can throw the car way beyond control and bring it back without a problem.
The Z has the VDC which I hate. HATE HATE HATE. It controls the car by killing its power. You can't shut the stupid thing off without disabling ABS
The Evo is harder to launch than the Z. But the Evo is a lot faster.
All in all, I liked the Z, but I love the Evo. I actually go out at night and drive around by myself in various spots much more often than I did with the Z.
I just bought a Yakima ski rack and am buying cable/chains for the Evo, something I never would do for the Z.
The Z turns heads more than the Evo. Hands down. The reason is simple. There is only a small percentage of people that understand what they are looking at when they look at the Evo. When you look at the Z, you're just looking at a prettier form.
Those are my nickels...

I also have a 04 350Z as well as an Evo VIII. Trying to sell my Z now since my Evo dominates all over it! I used to AutoX my 350 and do pretty well with it. The very 1st AutoX i did with my stock Evo.... DAMN... The Evo is a BEAST! Finaly beat several of those STI's that kept me at bay in the 350!
I went from an '03 350Z Track model to an '04 EVO RS. No comparison. EVO runs circles around the Z. I considered the STi. Great car, but EVO beats it out by a nose. Check out this month's (Dec. '05) issue of Road & Track for a comparison that the EVO wins.
Wow guys!
This is toatally what I was looking for, and with some of you owning both cars, thats priceless.
I did do some searching for things on this site like "weird noises, tranny clutch issues, warranty" but the info that comes back is kinda useless.
Thanks again! Cheers

Congrats man. Welcome to the Evo World. I will never own another car. I love my Evo and will cherise it until I die. Good choise in color as well. I have the Apex Silver. I agree with you about the Z. I test drove one and didn't like the blind spots. As soon as I drove the Evo, I knew it was the car for me.

wish i could have 2 cars... id pick an sti and an evo, although similar sti feels mor like an everyday driver whereas the evo can be my weekend/track car. imo the Z and the evo are not comfortable everyday cars but if i had to stick with one id definetely go with the evo. the rattle thing doesnt happen in the Z? a close buddy of mine has one and it rattles as much if not more than the evo... anyway if u do get an evo, go with the IX. its sooo purrrty =P
