Brake Sqeak fix? Clutch Stinch?
Brake Sqeak fix? Clutch Stinch?
Not sure if this is bogus info or not, but my brakes have been squeaking allot lately, and I read at a Porche site actually that they recomend doing about 60-70mph and just laying on the brakes, do that once or twice and the squeaking should be gone? I took note of this, and since my EVO gets allot of city driving I just thought its possible the pads were glazed. I hit about 70mph in a safe place, and laid into the brakes. Damn, its almost as fun stopping in this car as it is accelerating! I did it twice, and the squeaks are gone. I guess the theory works, I am assuming that the hard braking de-glazes the pads, andyone hear of this before?
Secondly, I have about 1100 miles on my IX now, so I wanted to really just step on it to see what it can do. I reved it up to about 3500 and popped the clutch and floored it and I hit warp speed in seconds. Question is, I did this twice and I noticed the clutch smelling. I cruised the rest of the way home, but I was just wondering, I know everyone drives differetnly, but, if the car has a initial limiter of 5500rpm on the start in first giear for take offs, and you only rev to 3500 and the clutch smells, how long will this stock clutch last? Is the EVO IX's clutch upgraded from the VIII? I hear they re-did the clamping part of the clutch, but is the material the same? or is it upgraded? Just curious if anyone knows. I apologize if this is in a past search thing, but again, I can't search from my browser on this website for some reason.....so I appolozie in advance, but can still use your help.
Thirdly, I remember when I bought my first EVO in 03, they had this crazy video you can download from Germany. It was an EVO VII being tested to show people what the new ACD can do on the Nurenburg raceway....it was a Japanese driver driving and it was an awsome link. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Have you seen this? If you have, can you please send me the link.
Thanks..............Jeff

Your clutch stinks, because you launched from way too low of an RPM. This is not a FWD or RWD car - it's AWD. If you launch anywhere below 5k, you're going to cause major slipping, which is what causes it to stink. I haven't seen any information or indication that the IX clutch is any different. There's no reason for it to be, because Mitsu made it the weakest link on purpose. It's cheaper to replace the clutch than any of the drivetrain parts. Regardless, the stock clutch is plenty strong. I am guess you just have no experience with AWD and thought 3500 was ok. You probably thought the launch was good, too, but at a drag strip, that probably would have been a terrible 60'. Don't sweat it - most newbies don't know any better and make the same mistake. If you're going to launch, do it as close to 5k as you can. Btw, the launch limiter is at 5000rpm, not 5500rpm.

My first clutch went out at 20k. If you slip the clutch alot and burn them they will wear out faster. You will get the clutch smell everytime your slip is bad. I read that some people lost their clutch at 8k. You just need to learn to slip it right to get it to last longer. People say never drop your clutch on an AWD car or it will mess up your drivetrain? Even if you drop your clutch at 5k, you car will bog anywayz. I have been getting better with slipping the clutch, but it is still imperfect at times...
