New IX MR or Modded VIII MR?

I'm planning on buying an MR within the next month, and I've been reading this forum for the last couple of days trying to learn as much as possible to make an "inforumed" (ha ha) descision.

The used MRs I'm looking at are the ForcedFed Evo, Driv200's car, and to a leser extent importdude's car:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=171834
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=174239
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=174524

I'm also considering a new IX MR. Money IS an object for me but I do plan on modding the car so a car with a lot of mods included is of value to me if they were done right. I really like how Driv200's car is setup and it would be a no brainer for me but I really really really wanted a graphite grey evo. I know that's kind of lame to make a descision based on color but I bought a silver Stealth TT almost 5 years ago and everytime I saw my friends black Stealth I wished I would have bought a black one.

From reading old posts Importdude's car has seen a pretty hard life and it makes me nervous. So does ForcedFed's car since it went threw a lot of parts swapping and I really don't know much about their reputation but I do like the Ohlin coilovers and Alcon brakes. Driv200's seems well sorted out and well taken care of (even though it was raced hard).

The other option is a new IX MR but I'm not sure about MIVEC yet. Is it going to be a barrier to big horsepower or will it always outperform a regular head with HKS 272 cams? A new MR means I don't have to worry about it's history but I'm starting from scratch with mods.

My question is what car would you buy? Or at least what car(s) should I stay away from?

I almost always say to get the new car over the used one, especially modded/abused used ones, but I think Driv's car should be looked at closely, because it's a hell of a machine.

Thanks for the votes guys. I'm kind of surprised how much people seem to like the IXs. I always buy used cars since I do all the maintenance myself, but with the deals South Coast Mitsubishi are offering I may have to go new.

Thanks again, I appreciate the input.

It's because the IX is so much more powerful thanks to the larger turbo, and it has more low-end/mid-range torque thanks to the MIVEC (e.g. quicker spoolup).

Normally since you plan to mod I'd suggest used, but the used MR's are not depreciated enough to make them a better deal than a new IX. When people start playing with cams in the IX's we'll see where the stock turbo can go

One option-the WORKS 2005 MR

One option might be the WORKS 2005 MR. This car is perfectly maintained and has all service records since day one....never been tracked....a great option for the discerning buyer.

check it out

I just still cant get over how Buschurs dyno reads them almost the same though... sorry

Either get an 05 MR or if you can an 06 MR - my opinion.

They don't read exactly the same. The range on IXs is higher than the range on the VIIIs, although some low IXs read the same as some high VIIIs. With mods, the IXs are reading noticeably higher.
