The engine in the 3 is closer to the 7bolt in the 2g dsm's than an evo8's. The upgrade path will be about the same as well. You will need a bigger turbo to hit 400whp. The evo3 is good for mid 300's. You can sell the original turbo back to the dsm guys (evo3 turbo is a popular dsm upgrade). Your stock internals and head should be fine over 400whp. Here's some things you can do.

bigger injectors(dsm style should fit)
bigger turbo
full 3" exhaust (probally needs to be custom, since no one in the us carries evo3 parts)
hard intercooler pipes
bigger intercooler
tuning (safcII or stand alone)

Thats good to hear cause I basically want to keep the engine as stock as possible, head block etc. I'm putting this into a 95 gsx. I have all the basic bolt ons and I'm getting dsm link when I get the motor in.

The longblock will be just fine for what you're looking for. Be sure to install a new cambelt and waterpump before throwing it in.
